AIBU to think that it is excellent that the government is dealing with the big issues of the day by calling those in prison inmates and not anything else.

What do you mean by anything else?

Georgeskitchen · 29/04/2022 19:37

Didn't realise they had any other name

ghostyslovesheets · 29/04/2022 19:39

how is using the correct term (and one that's been used for a long time) for people in prison in anyway dealing with the big issues of the day? Is it solving food/fuel poverty? Solving the economic crisis? Ending war?

You would have to ask the minister who announced this what inmates had previously been called.

Oh come on. You started a thread only to make us Google what you meant?
My STBXH is an inmate. I just call him assclown which I think is wholly appropriate.

Xpologog · 29/04/2022 21:58

Can I ask a question? Been bothering me since watching Canoe Man on TV the other week. If someone is an inmate for years do they get NI contributions / credits towards their State pension? And if an inmate was over pension age do they get paid their state pension in prison? No idea why this concerns me.

I listen on the radio to the minister saying it, check it wasn't 1st April, and so have no idea what they were on about. I was hoping someone could help really.

Look the Daily Wail are reporting it so it must be very unimportant.

I thought they were called prisoners, because they were in prison. I didn't realise there was any other name.

No they must only be called inmates.

Wait, what?
So you're suggesting that rapists and murderers are called service users in preference to what they are: criminals / convicts / inmates?
No thanks.

National Insurance Credit - no, inmates, prisoners, whatever, do not get a NI credit. This means they will gave a gap in their record. They can choose to pay class 3, if it will help improve thier state pension calculation.

State pension - no, they don't receive it. This is suspended until they get out.

There are quite a few different rules on different benefits such as housing benefit etc

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/04/2022 22:22

There'll be riots in Strangeways over this.😆

SpindleInTheWind · 29/04/2022 22:24

I am now also fascinated by prisoners' benefits

People are in prison for lot of different offences to the ones you mentioned. Some are there for self defence.

I dont know how many prison officers you know, but none of the ones I know refer to inmates as service users or clients...

There was a short-lived fad for calling prisoners 'residents ' a few years back. It died a death, and now we call them prisoners. I personally don't use the term inmates, its a bit too Victorian even for me.

PonyPatter44 · 29/04/2022 22:32

Its very nice of the Daily Heil to refer to 'guards' instead of officers, in an article about correct nomenclature in prisons.

Also, Dominic Raab is a cock.

Iamthewombat · 29/04/2022 22:33

That surprises me, because once somebody has served their time I wouldn’t expect them to be punished further by having their state pension reduced, but I suppose that if an ex-prisoner were in poverty after retirement because they weren’t receiving the full state pension, they would get pension credit.

It can be quite complex.
But essentially, if you are on remand, your benefits are stopped. But, if you are then found not guilty, some not all, benefits could be backdated.

If you have or live with a partner, your benefits are stopped and they will have to apply for thier own benefits. I think I think this would have most impact on Disability benefits.

While most benefits stop, you can claim housing benefit for up to a year while on remand.

Dontlickthetrolley · 29/04/2022 22:56

Prison close to me are called residents

Monty27 · 29/04/2022 23:11

It's just a collective noun for those in prison OP. How would you like inmates to be described? "Breakers of law" or what?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/04/2022 00:31

I've worked with ex-offenders. IME using dehumanising language does exactly what you'd guess. Calling someone Fred or Sally is more likely to get compliance or deescalate. Doesn't feed the vengeful hate in people though!
