AIBU to ask if SE1 (London) is a safe place to live?

DD has just been offered a place at London School of Economics. The accommodation she has applied for is on the South side of the Thames (Bankside House). She will have a 1.3 mile walk across Blackfriars Bridge to get to LSE to study. Some of her friends have said that Bankside House is not in a great area and not that safe to walk at night. Is there any truth this?
Forgive me for asking. We live in a very rural area and don't know anything about London.

This makes me nostalgic, DH lived around the corner when we first met. I would always go to his after a night out as it was so much safer, and so easy to get to. On the flip side, we would always go to mine to eat, I resented having to buy food from the mini Marks and Spencers, spending on one meal what I'd usually spend on a full weekly shop Gin

Fantastic area! Honestly one of the best places to live in London imo.

Honestly try not to worry, I would say most of central London is pretty safe really. There are always people around and things open, which makes it feel much safer than more isolated places.

Anyway yeah it's a fab area full of brilliant cafes, bars etc and obviously Tate modern on her doorstep so she's really lucky. It's nicer/more vibrant and residential than the north bank of the Thames (although that is equally safe).

I was worried about my DD too - she's in London, living with 2 mates in a flat in the Wood Green area, yet goes to a uni in South London!

I was really worried, as we too are from a really rural area, although we've been to London a few times, so she knows how to use the underground and buses. She's loving it, and after a year and a half is so confident at getting across London every day.

Living with mates privately was a better option in several ways than being in halls, so she took it.

Your DD will be fine, OP. Honestly, she'll love it!

One of my favourite parts of London!

Hbh17 · 28/04/2022 17:42

Blimey, I'd love to live round there - she is so lucky.

Momicrone · 28/04/2022 17:48

She could get a bike and cycle that route real quick day or night

SE1 is a great place to live - very central!

So much going on around there - she's very lucky.

Bankside house is literally next.door to.Tate Modern. I have stopped here recently. It is typical slightly run down rooms, but I would be happy with it were I a student. Normal.precautions apply if coming.back.at night. Usually return in a group or use uber.

I live not far away and we go down there a lot. Great location, so central. Would be very happy if my 19yo DD lived there.

We are not far from there. Great location, very central. I would be very happy if my 19yo DD lived there. As others have said, tell her to watch her phone (anywhere in central London really to be honest) - the phone thieves are very quick and crafty.

simplesooze · 28/04/2022 22:06

Yes. Totally fine

Squealier · 28/04/2022 22:10

I lived there as a 20 something, felt (and was) incredibly safe. She'll be fine x
