Assuming you have no doorbell or knocker is why they use the letterbox. What's the alternative? You don't hear the door and miss whoever is there. People are going to use the loudest option to get your attention.
When we lived in a flat we only had the letterbox so that's what was used. Now we've moved we've got a knocker.

YABU, I find it more of a pain knocking someone's door without a bell or knocker.

Then we got a new letterbox, a draft-proof one, it takes two hands to open and most letters end up squished between the flap and the brushes. You'd need to be Geoff Capes to be able to flap it willy-nilly.

As someone who has had to deliver 1,000 forms for the government ( that i had to get proof that they were delivered) recently, the amount of people whos doorbells don't work, who ignores the door bell or the door knocker, who sit in their house and don't answer even though they can see you are there. sometimes i cant hear the doorbell ringing so don't know if its working or not . So i will rattle the letterbox if it gets you to actually answer the door so i can do my job and not stand out in the cold and rain ( most of the time ) like a tool. And don't even get me started on people who have gates but no buzzer, like how do you know if people are at your gates ?

A bell ring or a knock on the glass or even a tap with the knocker.....but a rattle,,,well youv just signed your own death warrant there...

If someone has a doorbell, I'd assume people should use it. If someone has an actual door-knocker, I'd assume people should use that.

But if they have neither, I can't really see why a rap-rap from your letterbox is any more annoying than a knock-knock from someone's knuckles. It's not something I've ever really thought about but it doesn't bother me in the slightest either way.

My guess is that people who knock on doors a lot for their job probably get to know what people are most likely to hear and go straight for that option to save time.

I can't say it bothers me. I can't see how it's much different from using a door knocker.

Doesn’t bother me at all. Bothers the dogs though and you would be highly likely to lose a finger.

If it's definitely cold callers when I open the door, I silently point to the No Cold Callers sign & close the door again. If I'm feeling less of a cow annoyed I'll politely say no thanks or not interested thanks.

Delivery people ring my doorbell, knock the knocker AND rap on the glass one after the other !! Drives me bonkers.
