To say that Amber Heard is not representative of the BPD community

Waking up to dozens of armchair psychologists on social media gleefully announcing that A.H's recent BPD diagnosis explains her abuse of Johnny Depp.

I have BPD. I have never hit my partners, current or past. I have never caused anybody to lose a finger. I have never shit on an exs bed, or encouraged my friends to do so. I'm not a nasty person and I don't belittle people. I'm nothing like A.H.

Nobody is talking about the histrionic personality disorder she has been diagnosed with, just the BPD. Apparently the BPD is the reason for all of this and that's case closed.

So now an already stigmatised condition is going to be even more stigmatised, and those of us with BPD that stems from childhood trauma are going to be further demonised for just existing.

Lovely.

We do not claim A.H and she is not representative of the BPD community.

Although I don't have BPD, I know people who do and I agree with you wholeheartedly.

LaingsAcidTab · 27/04/2022 12:00

I agree with you that violence isn't an indicated behaviour with BPD, and I agree that many people are going to jump to the wrong generalisations about those with BPD.

But Amber Heard does have BPD and shouldn't be further alienated by barring her from a diagnosis that now has a very good record of treatment thanks to DBT and other interventions.

I'm not barring her from a diagnosis, just (perhaps in a clumsy way) saying that those of us with BPD do not associate ourselves to the sort of behaviour she has displayed in her relationship with Johnny Depp.

I don't like how her diagnosis is being used to explain the behaviour, almost a case of "well she has BPD and that's why she's done all of these horrible things and abused her husband"

I hope she does get the help she needs, it's just a shame it comes at the expense of everybody else with the condition who now have to deal with being compared to her - alot of whom don't have the funds or connections to access the therapy they desperately need.

Psychiatry is just patriarchy with a prescription pad.

This doctor for rent isn't even board certified, has "diagnosed" heard with bpd & the made up disease "histrionic disorder" and she met her once by zoom for 15 mins.

Depp's lawyers paid her to say what she's saying.

I don't believe a word of it.

Amber heard is being punished by media & experts for daring to criticise a beloved male.

The misogyny on display makes me want to vomit.

15 minutes on zoom?

Well that undermines everything she has said then, you can't diagnose somebody you've never met based on 15 minutes of a video call. What the hell

Exactly. It's a horrific shit show. I've been reading Dr Jess Taylor's take on twitter. You know the author of "why women get Blamed for everything"
She's analysing everything said through a feminist lens.
Worth reading .
She's on twitter @drjesstaylor

The Dr also spent 4 hours having dinner with Depp before we even met Heard. She can't possibly claim to be completely impartial.

To be fair, there is no proof that AH has done any of these things either.

TheKeatingFive · 27/04/2022 12:20

Heard has nothing been officially diagnosed with anything. Is that not correct?

MoreStigma · 27/04/2022 12:22

I've heard the recordings of Amber admitting to hitting Johnny, belittling him afterwards and saying he's being a baby about it, downplaying it as just a "hit" and not a punch etc. That itself is pretty concrete evidence that she has been an aggressor but then those recordings were very tactical, as were the ones she made of him slamming cabinets etc and who knows what goes on when the recordings stop.

I don't think any of what went on between them is due to any supposed BPD.

It's just so frustrating to see so many people saying it's a clear cut case of her being abusive because she has BPD and the BPD explains it perfectly when it doesn't, not at all.

Apparently she has, by Curry.

I don't know how legitimate that diagnosis is or whether she's even able to make it given that she's not board certified as noted by PP.

All I know is that she has been labelled as having BPD and now social media is up in arms slagging off people with BPD.

I really doubt that would have any legitimacy whatsoever

SM is an absolute dumpster fire with regards to this whole trial. All we can hope to do is ignore its fuckwittery.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 27/04/2022 12:34

Not sure where this 15 minute idea came from. The expert witness met with AH twice in December of last year for “several hours”. She stated as much in her testimony.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 27/04/2022 12:34

I don't think anyone is claiming she's 'representative of the BPD community', first of all because there's no such thing, being that individuals with this diagnosis are just that, individuals, and as distinct from each other as any other group of random individuals, but also because this is a back-to-front representation of the points they are making.

I happen to know a couple of friends with BPD, and both have, from time to time, indulged in behaviours that are eerily similar to what has emerged about Amber Heard. Am I surprised by the psychiatrists' conclusions? Not in the slightest, because my familiarity with my BPD friends led to me immediately seeing similarities in Amber Heard. That doesn't mean that I have concluded that ALL people with a BPD diagnosis are abusive and manipulative, and I don't believe anyone else has suggested this or come to that conclusion either. Can people with a BPD diagnosis be abusive and manipulative? Yes, absolutely, I've been on the receiving end of it and have first-hand experience of it. That is not ALL they are though, and it's not something that is perpetual or constant.

I understand the frustration about stigma and stereotyping. As an autistic individual I see it frequently when it comes to my own condition. Where I differ though, is that I also frequently see autistic people becoming irate when it's suggested that a specific behaviour might be down to autism, and railing against a completely misguided notion that the person suggesting this is implying that this is what defines Autism. I've had to step in and point out to some autistic people that yes, we absolutely can be obnoxious, rude, heartless, unthinking, lacking in empathy, and a downright nightmare to be around. Why do I do this? Mainly because I can be like this because of my autism, but also because it's just as stigmatising and incorrect to see other autistic people utterly denying that some of us can be like this.

People without autism are perfectly capable of acting like twats, so it's nonsense to suggest that autistic people are somehow incapable of it. Some BPD people are also perfectly capable of behaving horrendously, but that doesn't mean all of them are, or that it's inevitably the case when someone has that diagnosis.

ManAlive24 · 27/04/2022 12:34

I know someone with BPD who is exactly like Amber Heard. Lies through her teeth, manipulative, obsessive, needs to be the centre of attention, violent to partners. Not everyone is like that, but some are.

MoreStigma · 27/04/2022 12:40

I know what you're saying about the autistic stereotyping and I agree, my partner and son are both autistic and the stereotyping drives OH up the wall.

I do appreciate that some individuals with BPD can be abusive and manipulative, as can people without the diagnosis. What bugs me is how people are attributing all of her negative behaviour to the BPD.

OP posts:
Thatswhyimacat · 27/04/2022 12:44

Unless Heard has a diagnosis from her own doctors, not one being paid by the legal team of her ex-husband, then anything said about her should be treated with extreme skepticism.

MoreStigma · 27/04/2022 12:45

I have an ex who was terribly abusive, he definitely didn't have BPD.

Years later when DV came up in conversation the person I was talking to suggested that he probably had BPD, as though having the condition explains somebody terrorising their partner.

I'm gutted that people will think of me that way, based on my condition alone, when I have never hurt anybody in my life.

OP posts:
MissusMaisel · 27/04/2022 12:46

Your point is invalid anyway. NOONE is representative of the BPD community, otr any community. The idea that you can make any judgement about a person based on knowing some slight thing about another person who may or may not have the same named condition as another person is bizarre and ridiculous.

Why would you feel the need to arbitrarily align yourself with this person only to so rudely distrance yourself, when you know nothing about her or her life?

ArianaDumbledore · 27/04/2022 12:49

YABU

Whatever you feelings on Amber Heard are, it was Johnny Depp that engaged the therapist and there is nothing to suggest Amber Heard agrees with the diagnosis. Quite likely not as AH had allegedly said she had PTSD, but this therapist disagrees and instead says BPD and Histrionics Disorder.

I can't imagine I'd feel too great at having a diagnosis made by a therapist engaged by an ex partner., so she is probably less pleased than you.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 27/04/2022 12:53

What bugs me is how people are attributing all of her negative behaviour to the BPD

If that's what some people are doing, then yes, that's not what I would view as entirely objective, but then, you have to ask yourself if her behaviours are typical of a normal, healthy, well-adjusted individual, and if not, wonder if perhaps there is an underlying reason for them.

From what I know of her, she has not had a happy or straightforward life to this point. This is something that is also common in people with an actual BPD diagnosis, so, combined with her documented behaviours, I think it's reasonable to conclude that perhaps the psychiatrist isn't far off in her(?) conclusion.

To say that ALL of her behaviours are undoubtedly due to BPD I don't think is entirely reasonable, because she's a damaged individual who absolutely has been the victim of abuse in her past, so there will be behaviours typical of traumatised individuals. Living with Depp and his substance issues will not have been a walk in the park, so there will be parts of her behaviour that would be similar to any individual who found themselves in that particular situation, but then there are the really odd, and I mean really, really odd behaviours that aren't easily explained by anything other than one or more pre-existing personality disorders, so I also think it's fair if people want to explore and discuss that.

In the case she said she interviewed her for 10/12 hours cannot remember exact number! And she was definitely not in zoom call because of the while muffingate, she can hardly give her muffins while on a zoom call !

Newrunner29 · 27/04/2022 13:02

Muffin gate I'm referring to a point when AD lawyer kept trying to say the witness told her husband who her Client was , as she mentioned her husband brought her some muffins , she explains that she buys muffins for the office regularly and he picked them up that morning as she was running late, but was picked up because she said something like ill explain so u can stop asking about the muffins .
