Ds 9 had blood test as he's been having on and off tummy ache, it's improved since And he doesn't seem to get it now. However just been rang to make an appointment to discuss with dr but she said not worry. Booked in for Thursday next week.
But I had to pick up a prescription for myself so I stupidly picked up his results and shows liver function test to be discussed. Result shows total bilirubin at 40.0 when it should be between 0 and 21

Panicking a bit I have bad health anxiety can anyone help?

Any GP on here that can help with these blood results??

And I'd like to think the fact they are happy to wait a week to discuss results means it's nothing awful but the state you hear about ambulances taking hours and Waiting times it's not reassured me really

Can you ring back and ask to speak to another doctor instead explaining the results?

(Disclaimer- I know nothing medical, just seems like your GP surgery should have someone else who can explain it, even with just a brief message)

thanks, i asked and they just said its nothing to worry about and th doctor will discuss with you at the appointment. which i know should reassure me but im bad with anxiety

Hi OP, I know you're worried but please don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet. You have no idea of anyone's qualifications or motivations.

WildCoasts · 27/04/2022 12:07

Not a GP but my experience is that, with results like that where one marker is out, they will often just recheck in three months if there is no indication to do more tests. That's a liver function test. They can vary a bit. Sometimes it can be affected by just being dehydrated, having exercised, or something else. I wouldn't be alarmed but would follow up.

iolaus · 27/04/2022 12:09

The fact that the appointment is next week is a good sign - the one occasion where I had a blood test which was seriously abnormal - the lab rang the GP who rang me the same afternoon as I'd had the test in the morning

My immediate thought though with high bilirubin and on off stomach pain is gallstones (but I am not a doctor)

thank you, i know i shouldnt. i have just got a beta blocker prescription and have just taken one so hopefully this will help my anxiety

Only your childs doctor would really be able to advise further as results need to be interpreted in association with any symptoms/clinical suspicions. If there was a significant concern they call you and ask you to come in/go for further tests straight away.

Merryoldgoat · 27/04/2022 12:33

there is no benefit to the GP delaying giving you important information.

If it’s urgent they call.

it’s not urgent.

10HailMarys · 27/04/2022 12:34

Not a GP, but there are loads of things that can cause elevated bilirbubin levels and most of them are absolutely nothing to worry about - which is why your doctor didn't contact you about it urgently and will discuss it at the next appointment. I know it's hard not to worry when you see something like that, but I promise you that if your GP saw anything alarming in your son's results they would have called you straight away.

Gilbert Syndrome? Nothing to worry about, but generally identified from high bilirubin levels.

toastfiend · 27/04/2022 12:42

I have Gilbert's Syndrome and my bilirubin levels are always high. It's nothing to worry about and GP took ages to call me about it (and I was also fretting!) Obviously do chat to them, but if they don't seem worried it might be that they suspect Gilbert's Syndrome - I think I was recalled for 2 further blood tests before they "officially" diagnosed it, both of which were "abnormal but expected" according to them.

EmergencyHammer · 27/04/2022 14:01

Thanks all, hopefully it will be something minor and from what I've read it's reassuring that most of his other levels are well within normal ranges
