This is so sad. Is this therapy safe?

I cold water swim through autumn and winter in a lake and an unheated lido, and my mum and a friend have sent me this news story today. It's incredibly sad, and I feel so, so sorry for her children, family and friends.

Cold water swimming does carry risks, I'm not sure of the temperature of the lake this lady was swimming in, but the lake here has gone from 2.8 to 6.8 from the beginning of winter to now, and 2.8 was enough to take your breath away and would cause you to feel quite ill if you stayed in too long. At 2.8 degrees, 5 minutes is plenty for me swimming in a swimsuit, swim boots, swim gloves & bobble hat, and I'm not sure you could stay in too much longer in a wetsuit to be honest.

I absolutely get why people would think the idea of it is is horrible, but I genuinely feel invigorated, energised and ready for anything after a cold swim, and the friend and I who go together relish that time to ourselves, when you can think about nothing else but your breathing and keeping swimming as the cold water hits you.

@BoredZelda no one is being blasé about her death. It is tragic, as mentioned several times.

It is sensationalising her death by poor reporting that gives the impression it was the fault of the instructor or that celebrities are popularising a dangerous sport when by all accounts she collapsed after the swim.

I also suspect anyone doing an actual group like this has to read and sign waivers about potential danger.

I booked a series of whole body cryotherapy chamber sessions (standing in an ice cold chamber for 4 minutes in only shorts and a bra). The benefits for me were immense. Firstly, it gives you a massive boost of seratonin- you feel wonderful afterwards. Secondly, Ive ramped up my exercise regime and was struggling with muscle strains and pain and it fixed that literally overnight. Thirdly, my skin complexion improved and I felt mentally sharper afterwards. They actually told a client just before me that he couldnt go into the chamber due to his blood pressure (too high) and he was really annoyed and started arguing with them but they remained firm so they do as many checks as they can to ensure safety. Living is a risk. I bet those people who went to work on 9/11 didnt expect to die either, or the millions that are killed by drunk drivers - every single year, yet we dont ban alcohol do we?

This has always stuck in my mind as my DD has Issues with fatigue after having Glandular Fever. It was something she wanted to try so she could reset her symptoms. Long before I heard of the Wim Hof method.

Thankyou @DurhamDurham that is interesting and informative.
The death rate of this 'therapist' is 1 in 1100. Not sure of stats. re. skiing, exercising, sunbathing etc but this seems high?

That’s not how statistics work 🤦🏽‍♀️

My point is: we dont ban EVERYONE from drinking because one or two people cant cope with it and hurt others. This is the same. People have died after saunas- should we ban everyone from using them?

people aren’t generally too impaired to operate 2 ton machines at high speeds following a sauna and kill other people. Any risks from a sauna is to the individual making that choice.

the drink driving analogy is not a good one. If you choose to immerse yourself in cold water that’s your choice. Although if you get into trouble you may put others at risk if they attempt a rescue.
