Was I being U to throw the keys through the window? AirBnB Question.

I’ll try to keep this concise. I’m hoping for advice in addition to AIBU?
I’m on a long holiday in a Latin American country, renting a long term apartment via AirBnB, I’m a digital nomad and spend a few months in each city. I had been here just getting to one month when this occurred.

early hours Friday morning my air conditioner stopped working - in 35/36 degree heat, AC is an essential. I took steps to try to cope in the heat (bought a fan and a tiny plug in AC which was enough for me to work next to - just). I’m pragmatic - sh*t happens. I tried to “fix” the AC myself (nothing major, cleaned the filter, etc) nothing worked - continued blowing hot air. Upon examining the part of the unit outside of the building, I noted it was rusted solid and the fins were turning to dust. Aka, not fixable by a layman. So I gave up and texted the host. I’ll give a concise timeline.

Friday evening, no reply

saturday morning, promises to send his friend “Carl” to examine the problem at 5pm Saturday. 5pm comes and goes. 8pm I text host “where’s Carl?” “Maybe tomorrow.”

sunday, nobody. I complain to AirBnB (who to this hour, at 7pm Tuesday haven’t replied to me despite 5 different messages).

monday, host assures me Carl is coming at 5pm. Carl doesn’t arrive. I send the host a detailed description of the issues and photos of the AC, and a video of what happens when I try to turn it on (blows hot air, grinding noise and causes the lights to flicker. Clearly unsafe.) I suggest that rather than sending his friend, “Carl” he might send an actual qualified repairman to fix it.

Tuesday morning (today) he again promised to send Carl, tells me that Carl thinks it’s the capacitor (?), and tells me Carl will need X amount from me to fix it. Now, the amount isn’t very high, but the inference that this is my liability is a problem. Plus, I don’t think it’s one part, it’s rusted solid and I’m surprised it ever worked at all. Anyway. I refuse to pay. Host says he’ll pay “this time” but has a threatening tone (along the lines of “this better not happen again”) I don’t want to sound like a wallflower, but I AM a lone woman in an unfamiliar country.

5pm comes, the time promised, Carl isn’t there. But I’ve reached my limit and booked another AirBnB. 5:30 when there’s no sign of Carl, I text the host and tell him I’m leaving. I lock up, throw the keys through the window (which, like many SA city houses, have bars on, aka nobody can climb in). I ensured the key wasn’t within arms reach because of course I don’t want anyone to break in.

ive told AirBnB - who still haven’t replied to my initial complaints from the weekend nor my follow ups on Monday and this morning - again it’s now 7pm here.

was I being U? Anyone dealt with a similar AirBnB situation?

the Airbnb page won’t let me totally cancel the booking (throws up an error request) though I can set a checkout date of today - I’ve done this twice, and the host has declined twice (without actually replying verbally).

Ps, the host is apparently on holiday in Spain, hence sending “Carl”. I’m not a key wielding psycho - had host been in this city, I’d have personally delivered them to him.

I can't see what else you could have done so would say YANBU

(Love the idea of being a digital nomad tbf)

It feels like a Breaking Bad sub plot

Love it

Throwing the keys sounds fine to me

Ohilovetorave · 26/04/2022 23:29

What else could you do in the circumstances?

APurpleSquirrel · 26/04/2022 23:38

Where did you get the keys originally?

GrumpyPanda · 26/04/2022 23:41

Can you call AirBnB instead of messaging or don't they do that anymore? I did a skype out call to their US customer service line when I had trouble with a host in France a few years back.

airBnBQq · 26/04/2022 23:42

The keys were left with the maid that cleaned up after the prior occupants. I did previously meet the host, as well. But he has since left the country. If I’d had the maids number, Or AirBnB had replied etc, I would’ve tried to find alternatives.

mostly just wanted to know if anyone dealt with similar, or had an idea of Airbnb’s response (we’re at a bit of a stalemate). 🤣 I suspected I wasn’t being U - if I’d asked nicely to check out I fear I’d be waiting for “Carl” for the rest of my life. (Not his real name 🤣).

OP posts:
airBnBQq · 26/04/2022 23:44

The host is still declining my request to check out(despite the fact I’ve already gone), and AirBnB still haven’t replied. Could call, they do have a line for this country, but haven’t had the best signal. I’ll try again in the morning, though. Much faster than waiting for a reply.

I had to Reach out on social media and be consistent in haranguing them before I got help from Airbnb. Good luck.

also chat to bank to see if you can do something financially as you’ve had no satisfactory communication from Airbnb or host.

BabyBin · 26/04/2022 23:47

I agree...

Nothing else to do here. To be honest you were way more patient than many others would have been.

Please can you explain what a digital nomad is to me? Thanks 😊

Clutching at straws not wanting to go back to work for the NHS post mat leave ... however my skills don't appear to be very nomadable 😔

No advice on how to solve key issues but very curious about why you define yourself a digital nomad? I would think a digital nomad is someone who spends 1 month on MN , then 1 month on Reddit, then the following month on Quora and so on, so digital locations?

I guess a lot of us are digital nomads, wandering from one forum to the other ... no strings attached

crackofdoom · 26/04/2022 23:55

I recently had a host cancel a booking on me verbally, yet not officially cancelling it through AirBnB, despite me asking them to do so. So, I started the cancellation process with AirBnB myself, and they did ask whether the host had cancelled and asked me to wait a couple of days while they tried to get the host to cancel the booking themselves- which then happened. All this was part of an automatic process- I didn't have to communicate with actual humans. However, I don't know how it would work if you were cancelling halfway through a booking. I'd bank on you getting your refund....eventually 🙄

airBnBQq · 27/04/2022 00:00

A digital nomad is someone who travels around while working from a laptop (that’s the “digital” part) it very much depends on the person. You may spend 2 months in São Paulo, a month or two in Croatia, then a month in Berlin. Etc. Personally I’m spending 3 months here after hopping around europe for a bit (I’m British).

Some people have employers that let them “go digital” (aka work from whenever as long as you have wifi) but, IME, from being part of DN “ communities” ’this is uncommon. (by communities I mean groups, easily found online, co working spaces and DN “events” in the obvious places with DN visas etc).

Some are freelancers, working on the likes of Fiverr, Upwork, etc, personally I’m in the freelance bracket. Many are in software & developing, like me.

But there are also people who work as translators, advisors, writers, editors, accountants etc. I’m by no means a guru, fell into it head first, just trying to give the overall “vibe.” It’s a lifestyle.

if you do want to get into it, do a tonne of research, but don’t pay anyone for info (a subset of DN’s get money by… telling others how to be a DN 🤣🤣🤣) - it’s out there, if you’ve got a marketable skill, try alongside a secure income (imho) and go from there. 😊 hope I helped - didn’t realize I’d spark curiosity, just wanted to explain what I was doing “living” at an Airbnb.

Isn't a digital nomad someone who can do their job 100% remotely so they can live and work anywhere - any location, any country - from their bed, kitchen table, coffee shop and so on?

boronia · 27/04/2022 00:01

Cross posted with you OP!

cloudcats · 27/04/2022 00:01

I'm going to guess the OP works remotely (i.e. digitally) and travels the world while she does it?

I work remotely! I could do that if it wasn't for the DC! <counts the years till they're off to university Grin >

cloudcats · 27/04/2022 00:01

Cross post!

airBnBQq · 27/04/2022 00:02

Yes, that’s right Boronia. Though most of us tend to be freelancers - I don’t really know many who have a “steady” employer, though Covid is turning that tide a bit, it’s still less common than freelancing. But that just could be my “circle”.

HeddaGarbled · 27/04/2022 00:04

I don’t think that you’ve acted wrongly, but I do think if you take a cheap rental in a poor and less-developed country in order to enjoy your digital nomad lifestyle, you should accept that you’re not going to get Western hotel levels of comfort and service, so you’re a bit unreasonable to be so cross about it.

airBnBQq · 27/04/2022 00:09

Cross? I think I’m pretty chill, really? I waited several days, purchased extras so I could work (some of my equipment could be damaged if it overheated) and waited for the hosts “friend” to show up. Haven’t tried to reclaim those costs (and won’t). I’m a pretty experienced traveller - like I said - sh*t happens. But the constant no-show and inference of liability was a bit much. As for cheap… tourist prices. My rent there was about 20% more than my rent in the UK (and about 4x what a local would pay). Not that I mind… the amenities were great. Until they weren’t.

Ah no, I'm not calling you cross!

Cross post means our posts crossed over - I'd not seen yours.

I started typing mine, (where I guessed what you meant by digital native), before your post with our answer was here, but by the time I'd written it and hit "post" yours had appeared.

I've probably explained that badly but in my defence it's late here and I should be in bed!

cloudcats · 27/04/2022 00:19

So, I hadn't seen your post when I hit send. But I'm saying "cross post" so the timeline makes a bit more sense.

airBnBQq · 27/04/2022 00:21

Don’t worry, I was referring to Hedda’s post. Apparently I sound a bit cross - wasn’t meant that way. I’m not trying to lock horns with the host - I just want the booking cancelled, considering I’ve vacated. 😊
