Help! How do I store fondant cake

Hello all! I'm so tired I'm nearly going blind. I've just finished making this cake for my nearly 3-year-old, it's her birthday on Thursday and she's having a little party over Thursday lunchtime. Tonight was my only chance to ice the cake...Where should I store it to stop it going dry or attracting too much moisture? I don't have a top big enough but I have clingfilm and I have foil. I have a cold larder room and I have space in the fridge. I want to go to bed! Help!

Cling film it, it'll be fine! Maybe foil on top of you need to hide it from her though...

That looks amazing!! Well done!

cold larder covered in foil. I feel cling film will make it sweat - although that may be bollocks. Or do you have a mixing bowl big enough to pop over it?

catsonahottinroof · 26/04/2022 22:54

You're not supposed to put fondant in the fridge so I'd just put it in the larder. If you've not got anything to cover it with either loosely drape some foil over it or just leave it bare for now and then try and find a lid tomorrow.

Nothing big enough to cover it unfortunately! I should've thought of that in advance… I was worried about it getting all sweaty in an airtight thing

Store in an air tight container at room temperature (cool rather than heated via radiators). Don't cling film as can cause it to sweat & don't put it in the fridge as it can cause moisture a bit like condensation when it's taken out & reaching room temp.

Oh wait I do have a monster saucepan, like for cooking bags of food in. Will that do. If I give that a clean and turn it upside down over the cake and put it all somewhere cool?

hassletassle · 26/04/2022 22:56

Vats not bags 🙈

Lennybenny · 26/04/2022 22:56

Bare is fine. You need an area that's cool and dry but not warm or cold. I keep mine on top of the freezer/fridge or in the sitting room on top of the bookcase. Nowhere that gets warm as it'll sweat the fondant but cool enough let it dry out.

hassletassle · 26/04/2022 22:57

Thanks @Lennybenny . So totally bare ? Won't it go crusty ?

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/04/2022 22:57

Monster saucepan inverted over will be perfect. In the larder out of the way.
Well done!

No, fondant is moist when it's finished. Leaving it uncovered will let it dry out and settle. Make sure the room is damp and cool though. Once it's cut, cover with cling and keep out as long as the room isn't hot or in the sun. If it was going to be left for a few days I would say cover but as you're cutting it Thursday it will be fine. 🎂

Room ISN'T damp!!! 🤦🏾‍♀️

Okay, the pan handles turned out to be a nightmare but there was an empty crisper drawer in the spare fridge so I have upturned it over the dinosaur, it's on top of the fridge in the unheated larder room. The drawer isn't straight along the top, so when it's upturned there are some fairly big triangular gaps either side so it shouldn't go sweaty. I will check it tomorrow 😴

Thank you all :)

I hope the party went well and HB to your little one.

Thank you very much, yes it did and she was delighted with the cake. She said it was the best bit of the day ☺️😍💛
