Is my job looked down upon

CoffeAndCakeAddict · 26/04/2022 16:09

I’m a receptionist in a veterinary surgery.

It’s stressful and money is rubbish but I love my job.

When people ask me where I work and I say the vets, they say ‘are you a vet?’
When I tell them I’m a receptionist I’ve had some funny responses.
do you want to be a nurse or vet?
only a receptionist?

it makes me feel a bit rubbish.

honest opinion please.
what do you think of this job? Is it a type of job that’s looked down upon?

Blimey. I wouldn't look down on you. I see what the receptionists handle in our practice and am filled with admiration.

Sickoffamilydrama · 26/04/2022 17:59

I work in manufacturing and there's always a few people in production who are condescending about our admin team, you know the people who actually do the paperwork so they get paid 🤦‍♀️ people are just nasty at times.
I'm the world's worst receptionist it takes skill to do what you do.

Secretlymadeit12 · 26/04/2022 17:59

Be proud that you work as a receptionist- they are vital, businesses couldn’t manage without them. Noone should ever look down on anyones job.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/04/2022 18:05

I think what you may be seeing is the disappointed faces of those who thought they had just tapped a free source of expensive advice for their pet and having it swifty hoiked away.

spotcheck · 26/04/2022 18:17

People just lack imagination....

I work in a school in a professional role, but people can only think of 'teacher'

spiderlight · 26/04/2022 18:19

Vets' surgeries couldn't run without receptionists. Ours is absolutely brilliant and we value her as much as any other member of the team.

1frenchfoodie · 26/04/2022 18:21

I don’t. The most welcoming face at my last surgery (we moved) was the receptionist, she remembered our animals’ names, fussed over the dog, and sent a lovely card when he died. The vet and nurse were lovely too but she felt like the person keeping the whole show on the road.

AllOfUsAreDead · 26/04/2022 18:21

God help receptionists in vet surgeries. You've got to deal with the morons who think that someone else should pay the bill for their pet. It's not an easy job.

Maydaysoonenough · 26/04/2022 16:16

I am a cleaner. Certainly wouldn't look down on you op! You have a great job! The receptionists at our vet's are great!

Same. I clean hotel rooms. I'd much rather be a receptionist

HollowTalk · 26/04/2022 18:25

What jobs do these people do?

Toddlerteaplease · 26/04/2022 18:27

Receptionists at my vet are great!

MrsSugar · 26/04/2022 18:30

Some ppl look down on so many jobs and I just don’t get why. I’m a medical secretary and I constantly hear “just a secretary” “only a secretary” I am fully aware I’m not saving lives or earning fortunes but actually my job isn’t easy and secretary’s are very much needed ! I wouldn’t look down on anyone. Often ppl in so called lower down jobs are the ones keeping the wheels turning !

Crikeyalmighty · 26/04/2022 18:31

I certainly wouldn't-- when I used to temp I often did reception roles and enjoyed them a lot.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/04/2022 18:34

Your mums attitude sucks by the way

StageRage · 26/04/2022 18:34

I would think ‘oh, wow, how interesting’, and I would wonder how you manage a menagerie in the waiting room, how emotional it must be getting to know regular people with their beloved pets, etc.

As well as appreciating the organisational and admin skills needed to run a busy vets.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/04/2022 18:34

Your mums attitude sucks by the way

Figmentofimagination · 26/04/2022 18:35

I hate it when people look down on others for their job. Every job is vital and no one person is better than anyone else.
My DH got a part time job working in a supermarket nearly 3 years ago after a change in family circumstances. 6 months later he had his 1st promotion and went full time. He worked flat out through covid, all the staff love him, and he enjoys what he does. He's on track to get his 2nd promotion within the next few months.
His mother always looks down on his job, asks him when he's going to get a better job, says his job isn't a proper career.

DontKeepTheFaith · 26/04/2022 18:37

I’d think, what a lovely job🥰
Genuinely sounds lovely to me, I’d much prefer that to my job!

Your mum just sounds rude!

MrsRinaDecker · 26/04/2022 18:37

The receptionists at our vets are lovely. They were fantastic when our elderly dcat passed away. And also when other elderly dcat had a funny turn during the pandemic. If my GP’s surgery was half as caring and efficient I’d be impressed!

Whatsmyname100 · 26/04/2022 18:37

Yabu, I say that because you have no reason to feel that this is an unworthy job. The person was certainly very rude.

StillWeRise · 26/04/2022 18:37

surely the solution is thus-
So, OP, what do you do for a living?
I'm a receptionist
Oh, really? where?
at a vets
oh, that must be interesting

etc etc

it's only because you start off saying you work at a vets you get this response. It's not that surprising people think you're a vet/vet nurse ! Doesn't mean they despise receptionists!

caringcarer · 26/04/2022 18:49

Must be lovely going to work and seeing cars and dogs. I certainly don't look down on any jobs.

Nelliephant1 · 26/04/2022 19:05

The receptionists in my vets are worth their weight in gold. They're my first contact if I have a problem and their manner helps enormously. They're the first ones to dash round the desk to say hello to whichever one of my brood I have in. There are different vets within the practice that I use for different issues/pets but the reception staff are my one constant and that's who my main relationships in the surgery are with.

Don't let anyone ever look down on what you do. It's a job that can make tough times almost tolerable and also share in the good times.

I'd rather my vet left that any of the reception staff!!

iloveeverykindofcat · 26/04/2022 19:07

I would think how clever you were to get a job where you get to pet all the kittens and puppies that come in, but never have to do the heartbreaking stuff! Last year my cat had succesful pancarpal arthodesis (quite unusual for a cat to dislocate an ankle that way, but she's a bit special in the brain department) and made a great recovery. The receptionists were always delighted to see her for checkups, cheering her on and making a big fuss of her walking (then running) and using her paw properly. It was quite a journey and whilst I have nothing but respect for the talented surgeon, most of our interaction with the receptionists and they were great. (She's back to leaping and zooming like a nutter now, having learnt apparently nothing).

Workinghardeveryday · 26/04/2022 19:08

No way!!!!!!! As a dog owner I really respect and take their advice on board.

Anyone giving you that impression is a dick!!
