To want my boss to help with my lost money

I was paid one day late in March, which meant my childcare was paid in one assessment period, I was then paid normally on time. So this has caused me to have two payments of nursery in one month for two months if that makes sense.

I get the maximum amount back each month for childcare, so I only got one month refunded. I’m a single mum and things are really really tight as it is. I wasn’t sure how it worked and I’ve appealed against it. I had to go to a food bank this month because I’ve lost nearly £700.

My boss paid me one day late and doesn’t seem to understand how this has messed everything up. I’ve been a bit worried to ask if I could borrow this money because through no fault of my own I’m in the position. Am I unreasonable to think it would be okay to ask? I’m so stuck and he’s actually changed the date of pay so I’m going even longer for money now

Really confused why you lost money.
Pay dates can vary depending on things like bank holidays. It shouldn't matter though. What matters is when you earned the money.

ForeverLooking · 25/04/2022 19:08

Do you know why the pay was late? What happened?
I'm an employer and would help in this situation.

He just didn’t pay on time he usually has form for this happening but my assessment period is the next day. So I couldn’t pay my nursery fees until I had my wages.

Ooh! That's not on, is technically illegal too.

Late payments cause all sorts of known hardships with all sorts of benefits. Like any change topayemtn dates it is uspposed to be discussed with employees ahead of time, to give you a chance to avoid the mess he has put you in.

You don't have to challenge him immdeiately, so maybe, if you think this might be an issue with the compnay going forward, you could call ACAS, CAB etc and get some advice.

But generally I don't see why you can't show him exactly what his late payment has cost you!

You definitely need to talk to him and explain why late pay has such serious consequences for you. Additionally, is there any way the payment date for either the salary or childcare could be shifted a week so that there is a bit more slack in the system in future?

I am an experienced manager but if I were your boss and you came to me with this, I also would not know what you mean. I don’t understand your post, because it is not something I have personal experience of and being a manager has never required me having an understanding of child care claims.

I would be sympathetic though and I would be mortified if the organisation had caused somebody financial hardship. So me not understanding, which as I say I really don’t, does not mean I don’t care. I would be very happy to listen to the explanation, can I suggest that you do that, but explain it assuming no prior knowledge of the process whatsoever. No decent employer would want somebody to be £700 down because of a payroll error.

I asked because I thought I have nothing to lose. He does know the situation but he didn’t really understand why it’s his fault. For want of a better word. He said he can’t lend me any money as things are tight. I work 50 hours a week and I am so upset that i barely see my children but I can’t even provide for them

He said he can’t lend me any money as things are tight There's your alarm bell.

Start looking for another job, right now. I know that is easier said than done, but it doesn't sound as though he / the company is in a good financial position.

Contact ACAS and CAB. They will be able to help you find a way to word it so he understands that it is his fault and he needs to put it right.

You already posted about this OP

Do you mean you had to pay your nursery fees late therefore you weren't entitled to a government cash back on the fees for that month because it fell into the following month? Can you contact citizens advice?

BlueIvy11 · 25/04/2022 19:33

I had this years ago and UC (if you have that) let me put the payment in late! They will allow you to do that under certain circumstances like this.
