To be sick to death of tyre punctures?!

DH and I have needed 5 new tyres and 3 puncture repairs between us since January this year, the most recent being today.
The first couple of times I thought fine it's obviously just a bad coincidence, now though I am just fed up spending money on them, it's getting ridiculous.
I believe they are being caused by the new housing building site that we have to drive by to get to and from our street, the workers park their vans along the road, but we can't prove anything so I've no idea where to go from here. Am I just going to have to suck this up? Not sure how many more monthly new tyres we can afford.

Next time you get a puncture see if the tyre shop can fix it first. If not, then take a warranty out on any new tyres. My daughter had 3 punctures, all non repairable. Luckily she took a warranty out on them- cost her £7.50- so when she got a 3rd puncture they replaced the tyre free.

I’ve had one in 18 years of driving! That seems incredibly unlucky😧, can you get cctv cover/ ring doorbell etc to check for foul play?

buzzwoodyandjessie · 25/04/2022 19:37

Thankyou I'll have a look into these I didn't even know cover like that existed! Seems worth it since it's already cost us a lot this year and the houses won't be finished for another few months.

We have a ring doorbell already so I'm almost certain it isn't anything deliberate like that, just extremely annoying.

Yeah, it’s shit if you can’t avoid driving that way and is more than likely the building site. We had a run of bad luck and I’m sure it was the carpet shop & its vans loading/unloading on an industrial estate we needed to go to for one of the DC’s activities. We changed where we parked but you obviously can’t move or do anything about a building site!

What’s causing them? Is it nails or screws? The tyre shop should be able to tell you based on shape of damage and nails/screws or other shrapnel often stays in the tyre. If you knew what it is, you can try to avoid. They’d also be able to suggest if it driving related, I.e. scuffing the kerb, bumping on or off pavements etc.

Oh if I could park outside of the street and walk to and from the house for the next few months I would but it's all private residential parking around us so we don't even have that option.

are your tyres pumped to the right level?
do you go up/down kerbs regularly?
speed on motorways?
just asking as those are the most common causes for flats.

can you speak to council/building site manager about debris in the road?

5 new tyres since january is a lot (you know that obviously)

dannydyerismydad · 25/04/2022 20:11

YANBU. We had a spate of this when a number of houses in our street were being redeveloped. Nails and screws were falling out of skips when they were being collected and careless workmen were dropping screws all over the place.

The worst offending tradesman did manage to puncture 2 of his own tyres in the same day though. That gave me joy.

Yep pumped to the right level, rarely bump up and down kerbs and have been more conscious of this since the first couple of punctures, I don't drive on the motorway but DH does daily.
Today I literally drove from the house to the shop which is a 10 minute drive, tyre was fine when I left, came out of the shop and it was almost completely flat. It seems to be nails every time I take it to the garage and more than not it's in a part of the tyre that can't be patched.

I've spoken to the council a couple of times, according to them it isn't an excessive amount of debris and they haven't had any other complaints (we don't really know out neighbours but the ones I do speak to haven't had any issues), basically they couldn't care less.

I'm sitting right now with a flat tyre miles from home and I dont have a spare.. mobile tyre fitters are quoting ridiculous prices. I'm going to have to just suck it up! Only got the tyre fitted in October too, the whole valve came out when I tried to take off the cap, Really not impressed! 😭

narcdad · 25/04/2022 20:30

I've had 4 yes bloody 4 tyre repairs in the last 2 months (only ever having one puncture in all my 20+ yrs driving)

3 nails in 3 tyres and a leaking valve in one tyre, I think someone doesn't like me!

Another vote for the wheel/tyre insurance. I had a car that had low profile tyres & was always getting punctures & low pressure warnings. I used the insurance & found it very useful.

buzzwoodyandjessie · 25/04/2022 20:31

Oh @ChickenGotLegs what a nightmare! Hope your not stuck for too long!
