To take baby to A&E

My one year old has had a fever for 11 days straight, it often reaches 40.something, by which point I give Calpol or Nurofen which most of the time brings it down. Right now it’s at 40.2.

I saw the GP on Friday who gave antibiotics. Three days of antibiotics and his fever is still spiking. Last night, it continued to rise after we gave calpol so we also gave Nurofen which brought it down.

GP said if it’s not cleared by today, bring him back. But our practice is really annoying where any request has to be via Econsult. They refuse any requests over the phone and even if you don’t have access to the internet, they will do the econsult for you over the phone. I did an Econsult first thing this morning and it said they will come back to me by tomorrow. I called the practice to say it’s urgent and I was simply told it will be reviewed by end of tomorrow.

I don’t know what to do.

Agree with pp, definitely go to paediatric A&E if you can, 11 days is a long time with a high fever. Don't worry about overreacting when it is your baby: every time I've been to A&E with mine, he did need hospital treatment, and the doctors and nurses have always told us that they'd rather check to be sure and to go straight back if there is anything else that concerns us.

ScaredFTM1 · 25/04/2022 14:55

Thank you all. Spoke to 111 and they advised that we go to A&E. On our way now.

Hope they get to the bottom of things and you don't have to wait too long x

heartofgrass · 25/04/2022 15:38

Hope you're seen quickly OP. Poor lil mite

Dear forget about GP and go straight to the hospital! My son age 4 at the time had exactly the same and it was chest infection. GP missed it completely twice, just didn't hear the liquid where it was in the lower lung! For 13 days he had fever of 39.8. She also gave him the narrow spectrum antibiotics which wouldn't have cleared it out at all. Keep on giving ibuprofen and calpol following the doses and guidance . Iboprufen during night times to avoid seizures. Please go to A&E ASAP they will check him properly and won't let you leave without advice. If chest infection he needs stronger antibiotics. Once the right antibiotics were given to my boy he recovered within 48 hours xx best of luck! Pediatric nurses and doctors in hospitals are the best they know what to look for. Don't bother calling 111 just go!

I really hope you're sorted soon. Ask them to check specifically for a UTI

CrowAndArrow · 25/04/2022 19:01

Good luck at the hospital OP

CottonSock · 25/04/2022 19:05

So glad you're going. I would not be comfortable leaving it longer as there must be something going on.

Back from the hospital. They checked for UTI and did a blood test. There was some blood in his urine but they weren’t too concerned by that.

No UTI. Bloods showed he has an infection but they don’t know of what. So the advice is to carry on with the full course of antibiotics, and keep giving Calpol and Nurofen. If he still has a temperature after the antibiotics (he only has two days worth left), go back to A&E.

Don’t feel completely reassured by that as he is more than halfway through his course of antibiotics and there is no improvement at all, but I guess not much I can do.

Thank you for the support everyone.

At least its a plan.

Keep in top dosage on pain relief now if his temp stays up, and get as much fluids into him as possible. Are you getting lots of wet nappies?

ScaredFTM1 · 26/04/2022 03:44

After we got back home, his fever reached 40.3. So I gave Calpol, followed by ibuprofen a couple of hours later.

He feels cold right now so I took his temp and it’s 34.4 now. That’s not normal right?

I would go back. I don’t think you should risk this.

NovRainbow5 · 26/04/2022 03:56

I would definitely take him back to a&e op. Demand to be seen and for them to investigate what infection he has.

You poor thing, this sounds really stressful and rotten for your little one too. Yes I would take him straight back to hospital and I wouldn't call 111 first. I expect he will be fine but I would want him seen again Flowers

thingymaboob · 26/04/2022 04:05

Paramedic here. Go back to A&E. diagnosed infection with low temperature could be sepsis and although they discharged DC earlier children can get worse. You should always get your dc seen if any concerns. Don't worry about having to go back, kids go back and forth a lot. Forget 111, not useful here as the destination will be A & E and they'll always recommend face to face due to age.

XelaM · 26/04/2022 07:43

Hope he gets better soon!

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 26/04/2022 07:48

A low temperature is as dangerous as a high one. Take dc back, could be a sign of sepsis.

Bluesparkled · 26/04/2022 08:28

Agree with others, go back. My DS had sepsis and it’s not one to risk.

ChubbyNinja · 26/04/2022 08:32

I agree, go back. Trust your instincts.

Haveatakeaway · 26/04/2022 08:33

I was thinking sepsis too. Hope you're ok Flowers

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 26/04/2022 08:35

Really hope you've gone back, does sound septic.

Darbs76 · 26/04/2022 08:45

I’d take him back to A&E, low temp in these circumstances is dangerous. Good luck - keep pushing this has gone on a long time

Nap1983 · 26/04/2022 08:51

34.4 is an exceptionally low temp, if your sure this is correct I’d go back… extreme highs or lows in temp can point to sepsis, esp if already known infection

headspin10 · 26/04/2022 08:53

I really hope you are back in hospital and getting checked and all ok. Thinking of you Flowers
