To be worried about this . . .

The other night I went to the pub, as usual. I usually have just one small white wine spritzer and the rest soft drinks - never a big drinker. The other night I had a medium white wine with lemonade. We decided to have a Chinese takeaway and I had sweet and sour with prawns and egg fried rice.

Just after I ate I realised I had not taken my Vitamin C and zine and an iron tablet so I took them. Within half an hour I started to feel very cold, although the temperature in the house was warm. My teeth chattered uncontrollably and my upper body started trembling. It also felt like my body was just somehow generally twitchy inside.

My hands were cold, very unusual for me. Then the shivers spread all through my arms and torso. The trembling really was quite violent - couldn't hold a glass of water or type. I decided to drink lots of water. After about 15 minutes the shivering stopped.

But about ten minutes later it started all over again.

The third and last time it happened the cold spread down to my legs. I decided(don't know why) some simple protein may help so I hard-boiled an egg.

I had no pain or any other symptoms and am fine now.

I have noticed on previous occasions I have felt slightly twitchy somehow after a Chinese takeaway and it made my heart a bit erratic. My heartbeat was slightly erratic this time but with this other shivering.

I haven't had Chinese takeaway for a long time and I literally didn't remember how it had affected me before - I won't have it again.

Does anyone have any idea what it could all be about?

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 24/04/2022 17:52

Wonder if it's the msg in the Chinese?

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 24/04/2022 17:53

Just googled msg reactions and it does fit.

LoveSpringDaffs · 24/04/2022 17:53

it’s a reaction to the msg.

Everley · 24/04/2022 18:04

I have the same reaction when I eat food from a Chinese restaurant or takeaway. Plus flu-like symptoms and often a migraine. I always wonder if it’s the MSG.

DinaofCloud9 · 24/04/2022 18:06

I've had this after Chinese too. I agree with other posters, it's the MSG.

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 24/04/2022 18:06

Yep MSG
My mum can't have Chinese as she gets awful palpitations and feels fluey.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/04/2022 18:08

You can ask the Chinese takeaway not to add MSG to your meal from now on.

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/04/2022 18:09

I love Chinese food but MSG really affects my sleep and I have terrible screaming nightmares. I really limit it now, probably only have it 2 or 3 times a year.

The last time I had a Chinese meal I was violently, and I mean violently (stomach related) ill within 1 hour. DP was fine! I had such a bad reaction. DP remembered that I complained to him it was really salty and drank loads of water. We think the salty taste was MSG
