To not worry too much about 6.5 year old still wetting the bed?

6.5 year old DD still wets the bed on average once a week. Sometimes can go a month dry, sometimes can be a few nights in a row if she's nervous about something ie. returning to school after the holidays. Nothing in particular is bothering her otherwise. I don't want to go down the route of referring to the enuresis clinic yet as it's not every night, it's always just one accident, and also she is scared of alarms so the bedwetting alarm wouldn't be appropriate. AIBU to just leave her and hope it settles?

Six is quite young to be worrying about this. Bed wetting is a much more common problem than many people realise. I've been taking Brownies (7 to 10 year olds) away for years, and it is actually rare to have a residential where no one needs Dri-nights or something similar. I would just give her time.

DS was quite a late bed wetter and I seem to remember that that 8 is the age at which they start looking into other causes, so you have a way to go yet.

Just be ready for a quick bed change (it always used to be about 4am with us) and try and be as chilled as you can about it. She will get there.

I was an occasional bed-wetter until my early twenties (months being fine, then a cluster of 1-3 nights with accidents, then a few more weeks fine…). I was given all the referrals to specialists from around the age of 10, alarms, even medication for a number of years… nothing was ever actually “wrong” as far as anyone could tell, though, and then I miraculously grew out of it. It’s been years since I last had an accident, no idea why. It never ended up being life limiting in any way. I kind of wish I’d worried LESS about it as a teen. Certainly not a concern at 6.5 (when I think bed wetting is super common!)

Oh gosh don’t worry about it at all. Ds was regularly still wetting the bed at ten. He was 12 when he last did it.

My DS was 13 before he was reliably dry every night. Once he hit 9 we got referred to an enuresis nurse and tried an alarm etc. we tried different options over the years restricted drinks after a certain time waking him to go to the toilet before we went to bed etc. Nothing really made a difference, luckily he was really slim so still fitted into pull-ups. Waterproof mattress cover, and waterproof duvet cover helped with the practicalities and extra spare bedding and pyjamas kept handy reduced the scrabbling around in the night. My DS would have sleepovers with only his best friend ( friends mum was a nurse) and they were as matter a fact about it as we were so my DS felt comfortable there. School trip he had a pull-up in a wee bag tucked into his toiletries bag and he just popped it on last loo visit at night. The enureses nurse told us that even at secondary school so 11 /12 year olds there will still be on average one child per class who is still not reliably dry.
