How can I complain about a loud party?

House on the next street has thrown a garden party today - microphones, full amp, live music bands etc etc - for over 12 hours and counting. Still at the same volume at this hour. Just tried to look up making a complaint and my council doesn’t run an out of hours service and the wording on the site basically says if it’s a one off (which I’m sure it is) I’ve got to suck it up. Police website says not their problem. I’m working tomorrow though and I can hear it through ear plugs… I can’t go over myself as I’m on my own with my child.

aside from having somewhere to vent I just wanted to see if there were any other routes I can take to try and stop them?! I assumed they’d have stopped after 11pm…?

I would actually phone your local police station. I’ve known plenty of parties to be shut down after 11pm by the police. They may not be able to arrest people for noise pollution but they can certainly have a word. It depends on how busy your area is whether they’ll go over.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/04/2022 01:22

does your council have an anti social noise patrol?
can't remember the correct name, but could well vary from one council to another.

Xpologog · 24/04/2022 01:33

I’d call the police. Could be with amps, live band etc they’ve contravened some music license law.

misssunshine4040 · 24/04/2022 01:35

As it's a one off, could you not just let it go this one time ?

If it happens again then definitely report

itsthesoundofthepolice · 24/04/2022 01:42

The police. They'll try to attend however it's the lowest priority call and after a few hours if there's no other calls about the same party and no free resources they will likely close the call off. They won't phone back to check it's still going on to minimise disturbing the reporter if it's quietened down.

The police can seize house making equipment (only happens in extreme circumstances) but they can intervene if the noise is excessive.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 24/04/2022 01:46

I have phoned the police before about neighbours making noise at this time of night. The police have attended, however it will depend on how busy they are and if they have someone available to attend.

bagsforlife20 · 24/04/2022 01:48

Honestly there isn’t much you can do:

  • you can ask them to turn the volume down
  • you can ask the police to attend but as it’s not a police matter it would be a low priority and they may not take any action
  • it is a council matter, you can report them for being a noise nuisance to your local council but unfortunately it won’t be actioned tonight
Could be with amps, live band etc they’ve contravened some music license law.

lol that’s a civil matter not a criminal matter so police would not be involved

This is all you can realistically do OP if the police aren’t interested

Maybe don’t complain? If this is the first time, I would leave it - everyone likes to have a party now and again. If it’s frequent , that’s a different story. I appreciate you have work but if it’s just one time...... we’ve all had a bad night and had to go to worj the next day at some point.
hiwever if it is as bad as you say I’m sure someone closer to them will
complain before you . I would try to let it go if you can

Example from 1 council:

When we receive a report of noise nuisance we will:

  • contact you to discuss the problem

  • ask you to keep a diary or other record so we can see when, how long, how often the noise occurs and how it affects your life at home

  • contact your neighbour to warn them that a complaint has been made

  • try to gather evidence (such as ear-witness accounts and recordings) to pursue legal action if the neighbour continues to cause noise problems

  • where appropriate, take court action for which fines of up to a maximum of £5,000 for domestic noise and up to £20,000 for commercial noise can be issued if someone is found guilty of failing to comply with a Noise Abatement Notice, and possibly seize sound equipment if the problem continues

Redglitter · 24/04/2022 01:56

I'd phone the police. I'm a Police Despatcher & every weekend we get noise complaints. We try & send officers as often as possible & they'll either get the noise turned down or empty the party

Selfish scummy pigs

BigSandyBalls2015 · 24/04/2022 04:54

11pm on a sat night, as a one off, is too early. But by 1am I would expect them to have turned it right down.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/04/2022 06:19

I had this last year (and probably the same each year going forward as they're selfish entitled bastards). The police weren't interested, despite the people not even owning the land they were partying on and a load of people turning up to camp, live DJ, huge speakers etc.

Seems we're just expected to suck it up. I was also on my own with a baby plus was pregnant. I was fuming, but luckily off work the next day and my DP was working that night. The forms I got from the council specified it needed to be regular for them to do anything about it.

Celticdawn5 · 24/04/2022 06:35

The fact it’s at ‘one off’ or ‘doesn’t happen often’ is not an acceptable excuse imo having neighbours who partied during lockdown and beyond until well past 2am at which point I was ready to go round and inflict abh…….not knowing when it was going to end and then the ‘rousing’ singalong to The Greatest Showman was the last straw but the mad eyed woman in a fluffy dressing gown bursting through their kitchen door swearing like a trouper did finally draw things to a close ( I was surprised that I could get through their side gate and that their back door was open .
probably wouldn’t work in an inner city though……
