Going on holiday with parents might mean I won’t get a job

I’m in a bit of a dilemma.

I have a holiday booked with my parents in July, doing my PGCE at the moment. Parents decided to book a non refundable holiday as it’s cheaper.

I haven’t secured a job yet, applying for them at the moment. There going to recruiting for jobs in July which I won’t be able to make if I’m on holiday.

I think I’ve reluctantly decided if I don’t get a job before I go on holiday then I’m going to sign up for supply work with agencies for September.

Parents gave me about 48 hours notice to make my mind up when they booked in January as my Dad thought that the hotel would book up if we left it any later.

Booking a holiday without discussion is a really odd thing to do to an adult. Tell them you won't be going.

TonkaTruckduck · 23/04/2022 23:27

If you've paid you can not go. If they've paid you'd need to reimburse them I think if you decide not to go.
48 hours was surely enough time for you to mull it over and realise that July is peak recruitment time for NQT's?

Fuuuuuckit · 23/04/2022 23:30

You're leaving it REALLY late if you think July is peak recruitment for teachers. You should be applying now.

pastabest · 23/04/2022 23:35

Time to start adulting I'm afraid OP!

Its non refundable regardless so why not wait and see where the interviews land before worrying about it too much. Its either going to be an issue or it isn't.

If it is an issue then its up to you to decide if a holiday is more valuable to you than your career.

PickAChew · 23/04/2022 23:35

Schools will be filling posts for September by early June, unless vacancies come up at short notice. It's unlikely that there will be loads of recruit g going on in July.

daisychainsandrainbows · 23/04/2022 23:40

Assuming you're in England, July is really late for teacher applications, from my experience most jobs are going up during May as half term marks the last point for teachers to hand in their notice. Have your university not explained about the process of getting your first job?

So hopefully you can secure a job and still be able to go on holiday afterwards to celebrate :(

daisychainsandrainbows · 23/04/2022 23:41

That should have been a happy face :)

monkeysox · 23/04/2022 23:45

Go on your holiday. July is too late for sept jobs.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 23/04/2022 23:48

Some schools will try to get you to fill gaps in July, but you can't start your ECT process till Sept (I think) so there's not much in it for you. In most cases, they will offer to pay supply for work you do in July rather than starting you properly so you wouldn't get paid for August.

I'd go on the holiday.

Beachhuts90 · 23/04/2022 23:49

Loads of my cohort already have jobs and there are lots being posted now, if you apply now you could have something lined up well before then.

giggbig · 23/04/2022 23:55

most HR staff won't be recruiting in July, the recruitment will have been done prior.

HappilyHadesBound · 23/04/2022 23:56

I'm afraid if you don't already have a job by then, you'll be looking at agency anyway.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 24/04/2022 00:06

... ask to rearrange interviews. If it's the actual job starting just cancel and pay them. Stop acting like a child.

JennyJumpup · 24/04/2022 00:11

You will have many jobs throughout your lifetime, but you will never have another Mum and Dad.
Go on the holiday.

BarbaraVineFan · 24/04/2022 00:14

As a teacher of 17 years' experience, I would strongly advise you not to begin your career doing supply. It will be very hard and you won't have enough support.

Jalepenojello · 24/04/2022 00:15

What is your AIBU? Apply for jobs. If holiday intervenes, don’t do. It’s what grown ups do.

Well, as July isn’t peak recruitment time for ECTs, the OP will probably be fine.
