To want nice, affordable breastfeeding clothes

Just that really.

all the nursing clothes I have found are either very expensive/overpriced or very frumpy/functional with no style - or both.

I’ve tried the wearing regular clothes that button up etc route but struggling to find everyday tops that work for breastfeeding.

am I missing something?

Vest top underneath normal top. Pull the normal top up and the vest down. If your boobs aren't huge this works well.

Youre missing a bump band! I wore my pregnancy bump band under normal tops so i could pull up my top and not expose my stomach.

Samanabanana · 23/04/2022 21:39

I wear nursing vests under normal tops- it works brilliantly!

I remember this, OP. It really doesn't help that most nursing specific clothes are hideous as well as expensive. I'd recommend joining the Can I Breastfeed In It? selling group on FB if you haven't already. Lots of breastfeeding friendly clothes that are not breastfeeding specific, and they're preloved so there are some good bargains to be had. I agree that tops were the hardest thing to find for me - I tended to live in dresses and jumpsuits.

The cropped bandeau bra type tops from Primark are good to wear underneath if you're wearing a regular top with a stretchy neckline so you can pull the bandeau up and the neckline down so you don't feel so exposed if that's something that worries you. I did that a lot as never felt comfortable feeling like my whole boob was out.

I could hardly find maternity clothes that fit (plus size) let alone stylish. Are you on Facebook? “Can i breastfeed in it?” Is a useful groupS

Fedupsotired · 23/04/2022 21:46

I agree with vest top under normal top. Nursing tops are just a waste of money

Newbie408 · 23/04/2022 21:46

So glad it’s not just me - they are so hideous! And without being dramatic about it, I’m already feeling not entirely confident after birth etc and the last thing I want is to spend money on clothes that make me feel more alien in my own body.

anyway slightly went off on a tangent there, thank you for this recommendation, I’ll go and check out the group now. And very much agreed about not being comfortable with the whole boob out thing.

as summer is approaching, I may take the dresses / jumpsuits route more which also will get me out my maternity leggings…

Join us at "Can I breastfeed in it?" On Facebook.

Have you heard of the "one up, one down" method?

underneathleaf · 23/04/2022 21:47

Agree you just need a vest top underneath a normal t-shirt or jumper. It works with all but the tightest t-shirts (have fed two children past a year). I only found it problematic in the summer when it was too hot for two layers. I found special bf tops faffy as well as ugly and/or expensive!

This was meant to be a reply to @toastfiend - sorry not entirely on board with how this site works yet 🤦🏻‍♀️

thank you all for the responses so far, this has already been so helpful.

I really liked H&M nursing clothes and thought they were pretty reasonably priced.

Sunshinegirl82 · 23/04/2022 21:54

Also Sainsburys have a breastfeeding friendly clothing section, their stuff regularly features in the FB group!

OfstedOffred · 23/04/2022 22:00

Bf vests/camisoles.

Top up/open, bf vest unclips and you are away. God send.
