Some are on Findagrave, councils and churches keep burial records if you know the area . You may need to pay a fee to locate a specific plot.

Is it a recent death?

Cigal · 23/04/2022 16:08

Not a recent death, last few years, don’t know the exact date. Trying to help a friend locate a grandparent.

If you have no clues at all to the village/ town/ city have you tried doing a search fo an online obituary? That might help to narrow it down.

Is this in England, OP?

Yes - in Surrey, not 100% on the area. Complicated story!

Surrey History Centre may be a good place to start. Does the death certificate give a location?

nonevernotever · 23/04/2022 16:24

Do you know for sure that they were buried and not cremated?

Thank you I will take a look. Don’t have the death certificate / will.

Maybe it went to probate? You can find out here www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

Thanks - think this is only up to 1996? It was in the 2010’s that they passed away.

No Wills go beyond 1996, they are just indexed separately. You could order a copy of the death certificate.

Ring Bereavement services at your local council- you should be able to find their number on your councils website. I was trying to locate my grandparents burial sites and they were able to tell me where they were.

The first thing to do is to order a death certificate. This will give you their address and exact date of death. When you have that info then go online and search any local newspapers which may be online or in the local (to the area), library. There may be an announcement of the death and time/place of burial. You can then either visit the graveyard and search or search the church records for the plot if the site is large. With cremations it's more difficult as, unless the ashes are interned then there is no record of what has happened to them as many people scatter or keep the ashes.

That’s my fear, they might have been cremated!

thanks everyone!
