WFH - what does your dayclook like if you wfh

What does anyone who wfh (either every day or in a hybrid model) day looks like.

Argument with DH yesterday because I was sat working from 9-12, lunch 12- 1230, then back until 1630 as they're the hours I'm meant to work.

Did take a couple of quick breaks for the bathroom, grab a drink and chucked a load of washing on etc

We're lucky enough to have a space in the house for an office and the majority of work I do involves needing 2 screens which I have.

Dh says I should have come and sat with him in the living room with the laptop and watched something on the TV to relax a bit rather than sitting in my office all day (I think he was bored!)

Should also mention I did school run for 2 x DC before starting at 9.

Online just before 8, work until 1, stop for lunch and take the dog out, back and work on till around 5. I’ll put on a washing while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil, but that’s about it. It’s just the same as my office days only with far fewer unplanned interruptions and noise. Love it.

Oh, I have a dedicated office outside to avoid distractions when I do have to be on Teams calls, deliver training etc.

6.45 - wake up and walk dog
7.30 wake kids, give them breakfast, do school run
9.00 log on while making coffee. Look through emails/calendar, prioritise work.
Work in 45 min increments, taking 15 min breaks to play instrument or play with dog. If I am in a meeting, I often turn my camera off so I can do my nails/washing up while taking part :-)
1.00 dog walk
1.45 look at emails while eating lunch, pick up anything urgent, bitch about colleagues with partner, scroll through news (keeping an eye on the news is actually part of my job)
2.30 get down to business, might take a break to practice instrument some more, around 4.00.
5.30 ish log off (I'm supposed to finish about 5 but seem to be working more since WFH).
After school club run.
6.30. Dinner, baths and bed
9.00 sit down and relax. Occasionally do more work if there is something urgenton, or I have been distracted during the day.

On the plus side, I get more done WFH as I multi task during meetings and don't have to chat to colleagues. I also work slightly longer hours. I can then take more frequent breaks, which has been doing wonders for chronic back/neck and headaches I suffered wile working in an office. I also have time to cook proper food for my family, without the commute, instead of just ordering constantly and I get an extra half hour in bed.

On the downside, my office wants us all to go back 3 days a week soon :-( As public transport is so shit since COVID it means I'll be doing shorter hours on office days and longer days WFH, which will probably wipe out any of the benefits. I'm now looking for another job. There has been a mass exodus from my company since the new hybrid working announcement.

So in a normal day you take around 2 hours worth of breaks plus eat lunch whilst working, plus do your nails and washing up during meetings and bitch about colleagues to your DH? No wonder your work wants you in three days a week.

NumberCurtains · 23/04/2022 18:23

@Overthebow yep. I do. And I'm actually known for my efficiency at work. The thing is, I work in an extremely unproductive office where people 'value personal relationships' i.e. talk shit all day. Despite taking all these breaks, and multitasking, I still get more done at home. I would much rather waste my own time than have colleagues waste it for me.

lljkk · 23/04/2022 18:27

DH WFH in front of telly. I can't do it, I have music when I WFH but I can't handle telly. Too distracting.

Lizziekisss · 23/04/2022 18:43

WFH all the time with a laptop and large screen. Similar routine to OP. No way I could just work from my laptop, I need quiet, proper desk, often have teams meetings, or could be called at any time by colleagues, and also need to call clients. No way could I do my job and watch tv at the same time. Why do some pple who don't wfh think those who do don't actually have to really work much at all.

MrOllivander · 23/04/2022 18:46

Mine is heavily monitored so...
start at 8.30am, work until 6pm
First break is 15 mins, I have breakfast and make a drink
Lunch 25 mins so make lunch, eat, drink
Second break 15 mins, make a drink and tidy a bit
Finish at 6pm, get changed and on the spin bike by 6.10pm, then shower and usually eat around 7.15pm

majorquimby · 23/04/2022 18:47

DH leaves for work at 8, I do a bit of housework, shower, make coffee, head to my office, log on Break about 10.30 for a cuppa usually, maybe put washing out if I've put a wash on. Stop about 12, take dog for walk, come back eat quickly, back to work. Might have another cuppa about 3ish. Stop at 5 most days.

I have never ever sat on the sofa to work, I need 2 screens for a start and it would just feel wrong. I do have colleagues who I know work from bed all day though, I can't work out how that could be at all practical or productive.

hopeishere · 23/04/2022 19:11

Log on about 8.15 and check emails etc.
DS leaves for school about 8.30
Meeting every day at 9.30
Work to 1
Lunch 1-2
Work to 4.30/5

As the weather improves I might take DDog out at lunch. I do out washing on and have a quick tidy of the kids rooms. My work is very flexible. I'm head of dept so as long as it's all going smoothly I'm relaxed about timekeeping.

I’m back to the office full time after maternity leave next week, but I’ve worked some days from home the last few months to help them get caught up for year end. I don’t have the discipline to be at my desk for 8:30 when I don’t have to be yet, so I just take my laptop to the living room around 11am and work until I get bored. Some days, I might only work for an hour or so, but other times I work right up until bedtime. I’m mostly doing data entry and not replying to emails yet though.
