Hopi Ear Candling

hopiear · 22/04/2022 22:55

Has anyone had this done?

If so, why did you have it and were your aims achieved?

Was thinking of giving this a go to see if it helps reduce snoring so if anyone has any comments on this (good or bad) I'd be interested to know.

Thanks

Most high street pharmacies offer a safe ear cleaning service. Much safer IMO.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 23/04/2022 09:23

It's mindboggling why someone would pay for snake oil on this instead of paying for microsuction. Like, there is a service available that actually does work, because it goes in your actual ear with an actual proper suction device.

I doubt even microsuction would do anything for snoring though, because I'm yet to meet anyone who snores through their ears.

afizzysweet · 23/04/2022 09:44

They don't do anything and you run more of a risk of stuff falling in to your ear.

ManateeFair · 23/04/2022 10:14

They’re a scam. The wax you see after the burning is residue produced by the candle itself. Any reported benefits are a result of the placebo effect, and there’s a ton of evidence to prove it.

If someone has blocked ears you can get them cleaned with micro suction; some pharmacies do it and there are clinics that do that kind of thing too. Unlikely to help with snoring though.

zingally · 23/04/2022 16:56

I tried it when my ears were really waxy, and tbh, it made my ears even worse. I wouldn't ever do it again.

UndertheCedartree · 23/04/2022 17:10

My son had a wax blockage that cleared after me using a Hopi candle on him as confirmed by a doctor. Also the wax that is present in the bottom of the candle is nothing like candle wax it is definitely ear wax in my opinion.

UndertheCedartree · 23/04/2022 17:12

MaryAndHerNet · 22/04/2022 23:18

That's nice.

It didn't..
Research has shown that they do exactly nothing.
But I'm glad the placebo effect worked for them.

It did. The doctor confirmed it.

It's incredible how many people still consider snake-oil remedies in this day and age.
Think about this 'remedy' logically. Hopi wax candles are made of...wax! Wax melts when heated. So voila, wax comes out of your ear and people think this is their own earwax...

Have you had it done? The wax that collects within it is nothing like candle wax.

MaryAndHerNet · 23/04/2022 17:29

UndertheCedartree · 23/04/2022 17:12

It did. The doctor confirmed it.

That's good. You should get them to go in for study as they would be proof of something that no one else has been able to prove over the last 15 years.

Seriously.

Get them to repeat it in a controlled and scientific environment and prove that it works, they could make a fortune as the face of ear candling.

I'll look forward to seeing the results of the study, every one I've ever read says it's nonsense.

With my DS the ENT consultant just kept telling me to put olive oil down his ear which he couldn't tolerate. I used the Hopi ear candle in desperation and it worked. When we went back it had cleared. That is just my personal experience.

Not really possible as the blockage was gone so my DS can no longer be used as a subject!

Someone gave my flatmate some of these at uni and she tried them out on us. She opened up the candles afterwards and all we marvelled at the gunk that came out of our ears.

Then we stuck another one in a pint glass and burnt it down and the exact same amount of gunk appeared.

Nah.

That's interesting!

I have to say when I did it on my DS the ear that was blocked produced a lot of 'gunk' the ear that wasn't didn't. I don't understand how his blockage just disappeared after I used the candles.

So what is the 'gunk' if not ear wax? It isn't like candle wax atall.

FirewomanSam · 23/04/2022 18:06

@UndertheCedartree its a mix of the wax and the fabric that’s coated in it, burned down.

MaryAndHerNet · 23/04/2022 18:25

UndertheCedartree · 23/04/2022 17:58

The candle is in your ear so no 'stuff' can fall in your ear.

If no stuff can fall in, how does it suck stuff out?

Logic would suggest that the candle has an opening. There for, it is perfectly possible, and proven in studies, that shit falls in...

That doesn't prove that it worked.

Ds has had glue ears under ENT until he was 12yo. Sometimes we'd go and they'd be "goodness he is really blocked" and other times they'd be "he's totally clear". Tended to be better in the summer than the winter but other than that there wasn't anything we did to try and clear it.

Well, it does seem I'm being unreasonable!

So strange how the blocked ear candle seemed to have a lot of wax in it and it was also harder than the other ear. Also so strange that it seemed to resolve my son's badly blocked ear. The doctor was very surprised when we went back and it had gone!

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 23/04/2022 18:38

@UndertheCedartree very likely the olive oil did, in fact, eventually work and get the wax to slide out. You can, however, be sure that the ear candling did not, for three reasons:

  1. Scientific studies have proved that the candle does not produce suction.
  2. Scientific studies have proved that the stuff inside the candle is candlewax. (Not that that even really required a scientific study.)
  3. Incidentally, medical research has also collected hundreds of incidents of burns to the ear and eardrum caused by ear candling.

This was not like glue ear which he has also had. This was a very hard lump of wax that was pressing on his ear drum. It was consistently there. The doctor said it would need to be removed but we had to use olive oil to soften it. My DS couldn't tolerate it. We just went round and round in circles until I tried the ear candles and then it was gone!

I didn't use the oil as he couldn't tolerate it. I was convinced that the wax was from his ear as the 2 ears produced different things and really did seem like ear wax! But I accept that I'm obviously wrong!

I can understand someone trying ear candling on themselves could burn themselves but when you do it on someone else you don't let the flame get anywhere near their ear.

Be grateful I guess.
But I wouldn't put it down to the use of the ear candle any more than I would suggest my table lamp keeps tigers away, even though there's no tigers in my room..

This is only from my experience and clearly I am no expert! But the opening is very small at the end that is in your ear. It does not continue up the candle part - that is seperate. I was thinking of the ash produced as you burn it falling in and can't see how it could.

Yes, I was very grateful! It was such a stressful time as my boy is autistic and has sensory issues so this was a nightmare for him! It really seemed it worked as we went to see the consultant the next day and it was gone! He couldn't explain it!

You didn't quite get what I meant. We went to ENT regularly (up to 4 times a year) because he had glue ear badly. However he often had so much wax in his ears that the ear drum couldn't be seen. Sometimes he had none. Nothing we did to move it, and ENT consultant says the body does clear it for no known reason, and sometimes fairly quickly.
I'm surprised you were told to get it out; I was told no way try getting it out.

I know what you mean about glue ear. But this needed to come out. It wasn't like the normal wax that comes and goes. This was there for a long time. I must admit I thought the candles had worked as the ok ear had soft wax and the bad ear had harder wax - strange!
