To think they could send a quick email

Is it really so hard for employers to send an email saying you were unsuccessful in gaining a position with us?
After sending off my CV, then having to do a application form, then going to an interview (sometimes two) and loosing money by taking time off work can't they just send a quick email to say I was unsuccessful?
I actually think they should reply even if you just apply but they really should if you get to the interview stage or am I missing something?
It's just hanging around not knowing the answer and it feels horrible when you find an ideal job but they don't even get back to you.

YANBU.
It's really unacceptable that employers don't bother to contact you .
It's just an email. They could even send a generic one.
At least you'd know where you stand.
I'm sorry that you're having to experience this.

It's so wrong.

From the other side we get so many applications we can't reply to them all but we would send an email to anyone who we interviewed.

I’d contact them if I didn’t hear within a reasonable timescale of the closing date and ask for feedback. Did it once for them to tell me they’d made a mistake and would I like to come in for interview. Got offered the job.
Good luck Flowers

HR here, anyone that interviews gets contacted by phone as standard. We will also give feedback after interview. Charity sector.

If you've been interviewed, then yes they should definitely be in touch. I guess the fact that they aren't means they're crappy and don't care about employees so you're probably better off not working there!

I once attended an interview for a job I really wanted at a university. Afterwards all I got was an automated email saying I was the "reserve" candidate if the person they offered it to turned it down. It was from a no reply email address from a computer system and had no nice wording or anything. Just this automated notification. I was appalled, so so rude. Never heard from them again afterwards.

I agree with you OP. very bad form not to call you.
