‘’Weight gain’’

Idontunderstandpleasehelp · 22/04/2022 09:29

I seem to be gaining weight all of a sudden and I really don’t understand why. My diet hasn’t changed at all recently and it’s the exact same as it always has been. It’s relatively healthy, sure I eat chocolate and crisps but in moderation and I also eat a lot of fruit and vegetables too. I don’t eat cheese, or most red meats, and I don’t drink tea or coffee.

I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I have had bad IBS for the last 4 years. It’s got worse recently and I’ve had occasional bleeding too, but the waiting list for further checks for this is very long and I’ve been told it’s routine because my blood work and stool samples came back normal. Sometimes I go to the toilet 8+ times a day and I’ve had nonstop flare ups recently- so how on earth am I gaining weight?!

I average walking about 15000-25000 steps a day (not through active exercising, just from walking my dog and working as I’m on my feet all day). I also do active exercise everyday for about an hour.

why am I suddenly gaining weight? I’m still a healthy wait but I’m getting concerned in case i keep gaining it. I’ve gone from 8stone to 8.5 stone to 9 stone to 9.6 stone in the last 3 months.

if I’m just gaining it because of diet and not enough exercise I’m happy to accept that it’s my own fault but nothings changed recently (if anything, I’ve upped the exercise). Does anyone know anything more about this? I’ve never had it before. I’m in my 20s so far too old for a growth spurt or anything like that!

Ask your GP to get your thyroid checked. Any other symptoms like titedness, lethargy, dry skin, feeling cold?

Antarcticant · 22/04/2022 09:36

It sounds like something to see your doctor about, in conjunction with your other symptoms.

Generally, as you get older, you often do need to eat less to maintain your weight - I used to be able to eat chocolate and crisps 'in moderation' but now it's more like 'once in a blue moon' Sad . But that's a gradual thing, and you are still young (I am nearly 50).

The worsening of your IBS is reason enough to go back to the doctor, and you can mention the sudden, rapid weight gain as part of what's happening.

What’s your alcohol intake like?

falloutcheer · 22/04/2022 09:39

can you identify where on your body the weight gain is focussed on?

Idontunderstandpleasehelp · 22/04/2022 09:39

I meant to put in my OP aswell, I don’t drink alcohol at all and I don’t smoke x

Yes my thoughts are perhaps something hormonal? Hope you get to the bottom of it op !

It seem to be the lower half. I used to have a flat tummy until this started but now it’s disproportionately big and sort of round aswell. It gets bloated throughout the day from the ibs which doesn’t help either and makes it look even bigger at times😣
I also think my thighs have gained it slightly too. I used to have a (small, admittedly!) thigh gap but now I don’t. I’ve also noticed my leggings and trousers are a lot tighter than they used to be- that’s what made me check the scales in the first place!

Definitely not pregnant?

StrangeCondition · 22/04/2022 09:44

Possible silly question and will probably get lots of eye rolls, but any chance you are pregnant?

squiller · 22/04/2022 09:46

If you’re definitely not pregnant then I’d say something hormonal or thyroid. This obviously needs checking urgently, it isn’t normal to suddenly gain weight for no reason.

Definitely not! (😅)

No it doesn’t sound silly at all! I feel silly for not even thinking of pregnancy and putting it in my OP! I’m single and haven’t had sex recently so definitely not pregnant though😅

Every single one of those symptoms! But it’s not a new thing and I was tested for hormone
problems a few years ago due to those symptoms and irregular periods and everything was thankfully healthy! It’s just the wait gain suddenly starting now (and the worsening IBS)

It might be a good idea to get your ovaries checked out - ovarian cysts can cause bloating and weight gain. The vast majority of cysts are harmless other than giving these symptoms, and they can be treated - but always best to be on the safe side.

Then I think you should get tested again. Hypothyroidism can be very subtle and gradual in onset and just because it wasn’t picked up on a few years back doesn’t mean you don’t have it now

justchecking1 · 22/04/2022 14:13

Have you had a smear at all? You may be too young. If you have, when and what was the result?

RonObvious · 22/04/2022 14:31

You can get gain weight with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance. That might fit with the bloating and digestive problems too?

No I’ve never had a smear, I think it’s for over 25s (maybe I’m wrong!) and I’m under 25. I did get the cervical cancer vaccine in school though x

Have you considered ovarian cancer?

Mumoftwoinprimary · 22/04/2022 23:14

When you say you haven’t had sex “recently” - is recently more than 9 months? Could you be really quite pregnant?
