To feel like a fraud re New Job offer

I just got offered a new job which is a level up from my current job. I’ve been feeling under appreciated and frustrated in my current role for a while as I haven’t been promoted and been passed over several times for other people. So I saw this job advertised and went for it.

Now I’ve been offered it I feel like a fraud and that it must be a mistake!! The salary is much more than I had expected as well and I should be super happy but I feel totally overwhelmed and that they must be mistaken. I haven’t lied or exaggerated at all during the interview process so it’s not that. Possibly just a confidence crisis!

Has anyone ever felt like this? Did you take the job and did it work out?

The best advice to defeat Imposter Syndrome? There's no way you managed to fool a hiring panel. You didn't lie, cheat or hoodwink anyone. They knew the kind of person that wanted to hire, and that is you. Unless you're a master manipulator, they've made their choice happily :)

I'm going through this myself. Just scored an amazing dream job I thought I had no chance at. Whereas my current place turned down my request for a small payrise, the new employer will pay almost 50% more. And I'm just trying to stay calm and remind myself that I did a decent, honest interview and if I'm what they want, well then - let's show 'em :)

Honestly hiring panels know their stuff and they're confident in their choice. Congratulations and hope it works out well!

YABVVVU. But I do recognise all those feelings! This is what I tell myself: mediocre people never worry they've been over promoted. The fact that you're having these doubts is a sign of your professionalism. Congrats on the job!

Congratulations! You got the job because You Can Do It!

Men never, ever feel like this, they apply for jobs they are totally underqualified for, such is their ego. Women frequently doubt themselves. You applied, they gave you the job because THEY WANT YOU! Congratulations.

I felt like this 3 years ago. I interviewed with an employer, 3 times. Turned them down twice as I didn't think wage was worth the commitment.

Then they came back with a ridiculous offer. Twice as much as I was on. It was more money that I ever imagine earning.

My first few weeks I was bewildered and so nervous. Why did they try so hard to get me, what is it they saw. It wasnt even a role I had direct experience in. I was then given a ridiculous and unexpected Christmas bonus and shares in the company.

It took a whole but I realised. They are just a good employer who reward staff and generally tend to look at the person AND their experience. Rather than a tick list of tasks that you have done in the past. They don't want me leaving so regularly reward me. In my 3 years my wage has gone up 25% and the shares pay out twice as much as that.

They wanted me. They are glad I stayed and want to keep me. They liked me, my personality, my ideas, my skills. And they know how to keep people.

You didn't fool anyone. You didn't mislead anyone. They want you and willing to pay what they should be doing to get you.

I’m In a similar position.
But I’ve also worked with the people hiring me, so there’s no foooling et . They still want me although I haven’t really done the role before.
im very anxious but I’m sure I’ll be fine, and youbwill too.
Always take a promotion…then ask other people how to do it! You won’t be alone anyway

Congratulations, you totally deserve it. You've finally found a boss that will value your skills and talents, they are the hard work and dedication you put in.
I realised this recently, although I have worked in same establishment the last 5 years I've had 3 different "bosses" during this time and each other had very different views on my abilities. Yes I've grown in confidence but I've always had the same work ethic, abilities, etc was always over looked because I am happy in my current role and don't seek further responsibility, this completely changed this year. My recent boss, has commended my work on several occasions, asking me to share my practice and how effective it is. like u I was wondering why, I got so much positive praise etc, but I've always done the same thing and never once been ackowledged, but that's when I realised she finally sees what others didn't.
Try and celebrate it, you've done great
