Smelly periods

Embarrassing but oh well🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve namechanged anyway.

my periods smell badly and I dont know what to do. It’s a horrible but it’s hard to explain what it’s like- it’s sort of a meaty smell, and I only ever get it when I’m on my period.

I use tampons (but have tried pads in the past which made the smell worse) and have tried scented, unscented, all the different brands I can get. Ive tried a mooncup too which didn’t help with the smell either and I just didn’t really like using overall so usually just stick with tampons but I’m still noticing the smell with them too.

it’s as if the smell clings to me when my on my period and it’s always with me. I can always smell it from myself and it’s horrible. It makes me so self conscious and paranoid in case other people smell it too. I shower everyday and use shower gel and body wash, and I change sanitary products every 2 hours so it’s always fresh.

I don’t have particularly heavy periods, I would say they’re very normal/typical. They’re very irregular though and don’t follow a pattern- they often skip months at a time which I’m not sure is related or not.

does anyone know what could be causing it? Is it abnormal or is it just one of those unfortunate things with being a woman and getting periods that I need to just accept and deal with or is it there any way I can stop it?

Is it the blood or just your overall body? I get smellier generally and fine I just need to wash with soap during that week and reapply deodorant in the afternoon

O think your sense of smell might be heightened.

My sense of smell is majorly overactive during a period and unfortunately there is a smell with menstrual blood. It’s probably not as bad as you think but I know what you mean. I always feel that I smell like a butcher’s shop window in July 🤢

I find reusable pads and period pants definitely seem to smell less than disposable- must be the reaction of blood and chemicals.

I’m also much more of a Sweaty Betty at that time of the month- try drinking more water so everything is hydrated and more diluted.

If I eat fish when I’m on I get a fishy smelly twang, at no other time though, could be a similar thing eating strong red meaty meat

Red meat / blood / metallic iron smell is surely normal when you're having your period?

Isn't that just what blood smells like?

My sense of smell is def. more acute when I'm on.

I’ve had the same issue when I had it.

Hijacking the thread a bit but how have so many people lost tampons up there...like, how does that happen? Do you just forget it's in and it gets swallowed up? Where does the string go and does it not get in the way of sex if you're sexually active

Also how don't you end up seriously ill

I think many woman have a little pouch or groove next to their cervix and it gets lodged in there. Have to have someone have a rummage to get it out.

I think many women smell their own period, but not others. You need to ask someone close to you, you will probably find they don't notice.

when it happened to me, I was unwell at the time and think I’d forgotten I had one in and then put another one in - like gamer chick says it kind of fit round the back of my cervix so it couldn’t be felt. I definitely also had sex with it in also although before it started to smell!

I only twigged when I googled - I kid you not - ‘why does my fanny stink’ after I had to wash the sofa cover and it suggested that, had a root around and going it. Even double bagged it still stunk out the bathroom <double >

I was also going to say this, I developed a horrible smell and was convinced it was the early signs of a gynae cancer as thats what happened with my mum, I went to the Dr and he treated me for BV and it went away. Not sure why it was more apparent on my period though. I would speak to your GP .
