Dd, 3,5 has been ill with stomach pain for a while. We finally had an x-ray today at the hospital and she’s completely blocked up. Awaiting results of blood tests too.
she’s been on laxatives prescribed by the doctor, still not doing the job, she says to continue taking them.
Anyone else been in this situation, what to do?

Anyone have kids who’ve been through similar?

Wait for Drs tbh..DS used to not pool at all as soon as we started weaning so about once a fortnight we'd trot off to A&E, he'd be x-rayed and be full of poor. They'd give him an enemas, we'd have a fun few hours, he'd do a bit of poo and we'd go home. Rinse and repeat for over 6 months.

Is she on Movicol? That, plus erythromycin plus an op finally got things moving, slowly.

In case she does need an enemas it's just a little tube of liquid, don't panic. No big tubes/bags etc. What laxative is she currently on?

DS at 8 months would be in 8 sachets a day sometimes (as prescribed by hospital, they were much more agressive in their dosing than GP)

She’s on movicol, but doc started her on 1 per day then said up to 3 (when I pushed about it) it’s not doing enough! Been on for two weeks already, just got a repeat prescription

They need to up the dosage to clear the blockage, but bear in mind she may have accidentally as it does make it fully liquid. I am going through this and struggling as an adult. If she's potty trained then perhaps get some cloth training pants to help.

Once she's unblocked you need to experiment with finding her sweet spot, which is enough to keep her moving but also as little as she needs. They say to continue for as long as she's been bunged, often weeks/months as the colon gets so stretched it needs time to shrink back down again.

I would expect the hospital to talk you through this though now she has evidence as it were. Do you have any appointments booked?

If you’re trying to avoid stronger medicine, consider taking her to an osteopath. They seem to be able to ‘relax’ everything and are rather good at making children go

My little girl has been like this since birth. When she gets constipated it's always the same - raging temperature (was 42 when she was blue lighted to resus after it caused a febrile seizure a few months ago, i thought she was going to die)

She gets lethargic and stops eating. It's the psychology of it mostly for us, we've had so long of doing tiny, rock hard poos with blood surrounding it she's terrified to try because of the pain it causes. She's got a MPA and egg allergy too which limits the food I've given her.

In my more desperate moments (after she's already got a temp etc is giving her a big bowl of my ice cream and telling her she can have as much as she wants, doesn't need to eat dinner etc. The sugar and dairy normally cause a blowout pretty quickly but I know it's going to hurt her tummy. It's the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

Try fruit juice, really sugary stuff, cakes etc because I'm not going to insult you by telling you "make sure she drinks lots and has plenty of fibre and try prunes" because it's what every bloody professional says and sometimes I really want to shout "OH WOW I'VE NEVER TRIED THAT" with my best fake concern face.

Please dm me if needed, because I go through this on a daily basis with mines (who's just over 3).

@Matchingcollarandcuffs We went this morning to the hospital for the X-ray & blood tests. She then sent me the picture of the scan not long ago, I asked her if this was what was causing the pain etc, she said most likely but we’d wait to see what the blood test results were too. I asked what we do now and she said we continue with the laxatives until she’s cleared out. I had to keep asking should I up the dosage, she said to 3 sachets per day.
We’re due the next sit down appointment at the hospital with her at the start of May

@pantsandpringles Thank you 🙏 yes, she does keep mentioning about drinking lots of water and making her go to the toilet and we’re trying our bloody best!

@IDontDrinkTea Yes, I’m not loving giving her all these sachets daily

Does her X-ray look bad?
