Have we been messed around with wages? Below min wage

If I'm correct the NMW went up on 1st April?
I'm paid 4 weekly in a part-time role I have, and received my pay today which should have contained the pay increase from 1st April.

I looked at my payslip and the rate on there was only 20p above my old wage, and amounted to below the minimum wage of £9.50 set from 1st April.

I have contacted my company who explained it was some sort of payroll error that would be rectified.

However they've just now clarified that their pay increase to above £9.50 did not come in until April 11th of this year, and that we will see the increase in next month's pay.

So if I'm correct we were being paid below NMW from 1st till 11th April, which is unacceptable and surely illegal?

This is only my second income, but it's worse for colleagues whose full time job it is, plus it's a zero hours contract.

Have I got this right?

It's not based on calendar date. It's based on "the first pay reference period that starts on or after April 1."

So if your employer was in the middle of a pay period on April 1, that whole pay period is on the old rate, and the first period that starts AFTER April 1 is on the new.

The 11th is the relevant date for benefit increases being the first Monday after the start of the new financial year. NMW however increased on 1st April.

As PP said:

'The new National Living and Minimum Wage rates were introduced on 1 April 2022. Employers must start applying the new rates in the first pay reference period that starts on or after this date. Pay reference periods are usually set by how often someone is paid, for example one week or one month.'

So I guess it depends on their dates?
