I'm currently in the US and I'm off to a fairly fancy restaurant with some family. The bill is likely to be around 300 Dollars (I'm paying). Do I still tip at 20%? (Which would make the tip around £46)

I really think 15% is the bare minimum. I always do 20%, 25% if the service was really good.

Mosaic123 · 18/04/2022 23:23

I think that's right. It does seem to be a fortune.

Yes you definitely still tip at 20^

HistoriaTrixie · 18/04/2022 23:32

Yes, in a fancy restaurant 20% would be standard.

Yes, you do still tip at the standard rate. A very nice restaurant does not necessarily pay its waiting staff very much at all, as it is assumed that they will earn enough in tips.

The prices shown on the menu reflect the restaurant's lower wage bill, so you have to budget for a tip in order to be paying a fair price.

Saracen I'm not sure the prices on this menu reflect the lower wage bill as opposed to the fact that it featured in a TV show and is nigh on impossible to get into. But this us where family.member wanted to go, strangley enough the same family member isn't used to eating out in the US and is struggling to get her head around the tipping situation.
