Will try to keep this non tmi as not a poo troll. Haven’t been able to do more than pass a couple of hard pebbles a day in over a week.

Beginning to panic. Used a glycerin suppository this evening, an hour later and nothing. Nothing at all. Aaargh. Was led to believe it acted like dynamite, but nothing has happened.

Also bought Dulcoease today but haven’t taken any yet - never taken it before and a bit scared, but also desperate.

Eating the same diet as usual which is pretty good and lots of veg and fibre, so just don’t know what’s happening. Recently stopped taking some probiotics I was on, don’t know if that’s messed things up. Have started prunes today and almost ate the whole tin. Still nothing.

Had a colonoscopy in January for a different issue there is nothing sinister going on in colon. Wondering if anyone has some failsafe cures as I’m feeling really upset and concerned about this as I’m usually not this way at all. Thanks for any advice and sorry for the subject matter!

If you are saying that you had plenty of fibre etc jn your diet then it really could be an emotional issue.. stressed? Worried?
I can recommend linseed, spoonful of olive oil, coffee of course, prune juice

Beckstar0 · 17/04/2022 22:50

Dulcolax will have you shitting through the eye of a needle in no time.

WilsonMilson · 17/04/2022 23:02

Thanks everyone, I’ve just had 4 large glasses of water and finished the tin of prunes. Going to take a dulcoease now before bed and hope for some movement tomorrow.

I am not at my main home at the moment, travelled to small second home last week (travel does seem to affect my bowels) and here for another week so can’t see GP, and meant to be doing a bit more travelling about this week but don’t want to go anywhere until something has moved. So miserable.

Loads and loads of water. Get a big bag of oranges and juice them, mix the juice with hot water and drink it. And most importantly, find something to raise your feet when sitting on the toilet. I've used boxes before, you can buy steps designed for the purpose. Basically you want to raise your knees as much as possible, then your colon is nice and straight and gravity will do a lot of the work, as opposed to sitting with your feet on the floor where you're essentially trying to poop around a right angle.

TheDolphinHotel · 17/04/2022 23:49

Oh, MarmiteColander has already said that. But yes it helps. I've been horribly constipated in the past and that approach has always worked

KitKattaktik · 17/04/2022 23:51

Hot shower. Aim the water stream at your bum. You should jump out of the shower desperately needing a poo!!

Drink lots of water. Up your fibre.

I use Dulcoease to keep things moving.

Ericaequites · 18/04/2022 01:13

Have you tried Milk of Magnesia?

greenlynx · 18/04/2022 01:24

I would wait a bit - you don’t want to end up with quite the opposite problem.
Energetic walk before or straight after breakfast helps me and also eating something different at breakfast.

Rainallnight · 18/04/2022 01:25

You need Movicol and a stimulant like senna or sodium picosulfate. You can buy both OTC. You’re too far gone for any natural/food based remedies like prunes. Definitely as much water as possible.

Toothsil · 18/04/2022 01:32

Lactulose and plenty water. It worked quickly yet gently when I was constipated after surgery and lots of opiates. I was seriously uncomfortable and really starting to stress out but it had me going within a couple of hours and was very comfortable to do, no pain or dramatic results like with proper laxatives.

ivykaty44 · 18/04/2022 01:33

and here for another week so can’t see GP

You can sign on as a temporary patient, if U.K.

Ginandvomits · 18/04/2022 11:27

I know it sounds counter intuitive but when you're already constipated you shouldn't be eating high fibre because it adds to the bulk. In this instance you might want to try both top down (oral) and bottom up (suppository) to tackle both ends of the blockage.

Movicol is great and will add water and soften the stool, you want to take at least three sachets with water. You may also need a "stimulant" that will start movement either oral or medicated suppository.

I've dealt with years of encoporesis with DC so sadly am an expert in this area.

Best of luck OP.

MrsWooster · 18/04/2022 11:32

Massage your abdomen in a steady clockwise pattern, with a bit more focus on the left hand side working downwards. This is as well as lots of water, prunes etc. It really does work for me.

Goldengoosey · 18/04/2022 11:46

I feel your pain OP. I take codeine and often find myself constipated and actually frightened to go because of the pain. I’ve tried a lot of things. Most effective for me are a lot of water, a swig of syrup of figs or Andrews liver salts before bed.

The raising your feet whilst on the toilet didn’t do much for me. I bought a wee stool from Amazon too. Spicy food def helps or a liberal shake of chilli flakes on things. Start the day with a double espresso. The coffee seems to be the most reliable thing for me.

Also my granny used to swear by pouring a kettle of boiling water down the pan and sitting on it. That does seem to loosen things up a bit but did nothing for me on its own. I think some of the sugar free sweets are meant to be quite good laxative if you eat the packet Grin.

I’ve found myself in tears more than once with constipation. It’s such a horrible thing and such a relief when you actually go x

Xpologog · 18/04/2022 11:54

In a blender/ nutribullet put water, one cored but unpeeled apple, one cored but unpeeled apple, two big handfuls of raw kale. You can also add some grapes and/or a couple of destoned plums. Whizz. Drink.
2 or 3 times in a day if necessary. Works every time.

Oneeata · 18/04/2022 11:54

Chia pudding every time. Mix 2Tbsp chia seeds and about 100ml DBL cream leave in fridge for about 20 mins and within 10/15 mins of eating you'll get the best relief ever.

Xpologog · 18/04/2022 11:54

** one apple plus one pear!!!! Duh

ancientgran · 18/04/2022 12:00

Rutin, it works and is gentle. Dulcoease was agony for me but it did work, most other things useless.

Rutin is an extract of the pineapple plant, I take one tablet every morning and never had a problem since, it is also anti inflamatory which is why I started taking it.

deedeemegadoodoo · 18/04/2022 12:06

Natural yogurt, 4 or 5 prunes, spoonful of flax seeds. Mix together and have for breakfast.

ItsYabbaDabbaDoTime · 18/04/2022 12:13

Double strength expresso and keep walking until it takes effect.

Buttercup72 · 18/04/2022 12:20

Drink a large glass of kefir, should get you moving in no time.
