I’ve visited all of the villages - walked between some and hopped on the train to see others. I can’t remember which one we stayed in though. It’s very touristy (lots of Americans) but COVID may have impacted that. I wouldn’t say it’s tacky though. It’s very pretty and worth visiting for a day or two!

I loved it, it's a beautiful town.

Take excellent walking shoes!!

We stayed in Levanto, just the next station along from Cinque Terre- lovely and relaxing town and much cheaper! If you are hopping from town to town on the train anyway it’s a great option. We would 100% recommend visiting this way as we found some of the towns very cramped and busy, was lovely hopping 10 mins on the train to our airbnb and having a relaxing apreritivo every evening on the square.

It's beautiful. Genuinely beautiful.

Rheia1983 · 17/04/2022 20:19

I was just there last week. I stayed in Monterosso and at a place called Unico.

Cinque Terre is beautiful and the food in most of the restaurants excellent. Luckily April is just the start of the tourism season and it wasn't overflowing with tourists yet and you could enjoy the ocean and hiking paths without feeling packed in like a sardine.

Price-wise, expect to pay between EUR 5-10 for wine and drinks, EUR 8-18 for appetizers, EUR 12-20 for pizza and EUR 18-30 for main dishes on average. Reservations for restaurants with good Google and Trip Advisor ratings is recommended.

I stayed in Levanto and took a train to the 5 towns. There is an American travel writer, Rick Steves and he has lot of info about the different villages. Lots of American college students there in summer but probably quiet at night as there are a lot of day trippers. Not much beach space. If I recall you can hike all villages in a day as its not that far. Very few Brits...its not on their radar.

cato40 · 17/04/2022 20:26

As an Italian I'd say it is not tacky at all, busy, full of tourist and for a reason. I'd suggest staying in Levanto, cheaper and still close to the 5 villages. August is super peak season so if you go any other time that would be better. Don't hire a car, parking is a nightmare, when we went we got a 250 euros fine on day one! Which made the whole holiday a bit sour, avoid driving if you can!

We stay at the Hotel Porto Rocca in Monterosso which has the only real beach out of the five lands and a great focaccia and seafood place along the beachfront.

NeverChange · 17/04/2022 20:57

We stayed in Monterosso too.

All 5 villages are close together. We took the train to some, and the walking trail to others. We tended to take the easiesr walking trails and get the train back when it was uphill!

It's very touristy but not tacky. We did a mix with the restaurants, cheap some nights, splashed out others. It's far more affordable than I expected.

I recommend staying in one of the towns (maybe not the one that starts with v as the train station is by the sea and the town is up so have to go up 200 stairs. ). It’s nice to stay in the area when most of the people are gone and it’s so peaceful
