To worry about MIL's memory after this

My MIL babysat for us a month ago, while she was here she mentioned she'd seen the film The Duke at the cinema. She said she quite liked it and described it as a caper kind of film. We went for lunch today and FIL mentioned them having seen it but MIL denied any knowledge of it. We described the film and even showed her the trailer but she could not remember having seen it. She seemed quite perturbed that she couldn't remember it.

I mentioned it to DH on the way home but he brushed it off but I thought it was bizarre tbh.

It does sound worrying, yes. I can see why she was worried about it, it's horrible when your memory doesn't work/plays tricks on you.

She's 72 fyi.

Had a similar experience with my mum - took her to see Phantom of the Opera for her birthday - quite a dramatic performance and definitely memorable. Some months later she had no recollection of it, even when we played the sound track to her. As far as she was concerned it had never happened. Looking back there had been other issues with her memory but all fairly low key and in hind sight she had been covering things up well. However her memory difficulties increased resulting in a diagnosis of vascular dementia. I can understand why your MIL might be perturbed and probably worth a GP appointment.

I'd be very worried.
I wonder if FIL has noticed her forgetfulness.
I'd have a serious talk with dh about speaking to his Dad about this.

I’d be gently trying to suggest she see a GP. These things are much better caught earlier and meds can be taken to slow it down.

Thank you so much, she is on a lot of pain medication for a bad hip so dh suggested that might be the cause but I'm not sure. It seems such a big thing to forget completely. I'll talk to him about it.

It could be the pain medication, worth asking a pharmacist or gp if it's a side effect. Or also if she has an infection of any sort? As this made my grandad seem to loose his marbles for a few days whilst taking certain medication
