People who say 'Christmas comes earlier every year'

Why don't you ever hear people complaining that Easter comes earlier every year? Chocolate eggs and hot cross have been in the shops for what feels like 5 months at this stage. Not that I'm complaining Blush

The earliest Easter build-up could even theoretically start is kind of up against a hard limit i.e. Christmas. And the retail sector needs a breather after January sales? Valentine's? Mother's Day?

MangyInseam · 17/04/2022 01:56

I don't think the commercial lead-up to Easter is as noticible to most people, although it is also earlier than it used to be. But they really start hitting you over the head with Christmas as soon as they can now, I see more and more people with trees and lights on November 1st.

MangyInseam · 17/04/2022 01:57

Also, there is a lot more people feel pressed to do at Christmas. Easter is fairly straightforward if you are secular with it.

Runliketheclappers · 17/04/2022 02:11

The crocuses come up earlier every year I’m sure.

While this may be true we can't blame global warming for the shops erecting Christmas trees in September.

I always hear people complaining that Easter comes earlier every year! It was something that was obligatory to say as soon as you saw Easter eggs in the shops when I worked in an office

jokalyn · 17/04/2022 02:54

I have so many 'friends' who have spent all year buying and wrapping presents preparing for Xmas that they're done by November. I've also had so many mum friend s so obsessed by Xmas that kids ages 6-8 have seen so many Santas before December That they're already bored of it. So much effort to make all the magic it actually ruins it

Christmas has started in September for years at this point, it's not a new thing.

Within the retail sector it's now just continuous from one thing to the next.

Cadburys creme eggs and mini eggs appear on Boxing Day, but Easter Eggs aren't fully on offer until after Burns Night, Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Then it's Easter. Then St George's Day.

I can't actually think what comes next, but this year it will be the jubilee. Then Father's Day. Then 'back to school' about 5 seconds after the schools have broken up.

Once the schools have gone back, we can move onto Halloween and the first signs of the run up to Christmas, with mince pies and the walls of Quality Street etc appearing at the entrance to shops.

Then Bonfire Night hits the day after Halloween and once that's over then it's full on Christmas until the end of the year.

What surprises me writing that is that none of the main UK supermarkets have jumped onto the 'Swedish Crayfish Party' bandwagon, which would give them an excuse to push crayfish themed gatherings with associated outdoor tableware and extra booze in late August, just before they start ramping up to all the autumn selling excuses.

starrynight21 · 17/04/2022 05:19

I think we notice the Christmas build-up more because the shops are fully decorated, Father Christmas is seen in shopping centres, etc. Easter does have a long build-up but it isn't so noticeable because it's only eggs and buns in the shops.

sashh · 17/04/2022 05:57

What amuses me with Easter, is that the weeks leading up are Lent, the time when Christians fast or give up something they like, so they are not the ones buying extra chocolate, hot cross buns etc.

It's also easier to ignore because shops tend not to play Easter music and as someone else said the decorations.

Twizbe · 17/04/2022 06:26

I think it's not noticed as much because Easter is a movable feast. Some years it's in March so of course the build up will start earlier.

Vsirbdo · 17/04/2022 06:44

The problem I find about all their things “coming earlier” is I feel I have loads of time to buy Easter eggs then suddenly it’s 3 days before and they’re nearly sold out

The music too! You really notice the Christmas music blasting in the shops, but there's no Easter music.

I think people do comment on how early the shops start stocking Easter eggs, but I think a lot of shops sell out by Easter, so I guess it works well for the shops not to have a lot of extra stock left over to get rid of.

AuntieStella · 17/04/2022 06:51

Yes, I hear it. Easter eggs appear earlier (hoping I suppose well buy, eat and buy again)

Even Simnel cakes are around for longer.

And there are many who condemn the wide availability of hot cross buns

Seasonality marks out the year.

I do think it's a good thing.

RancidOldHag · 17/04/2022 06:54

but it isn't so noticeable because it's only eggs and buns in the shops

Except it's also bunnies and carrots, and twiggy shite, and decorations, and spring wreathes, and fairy lights , and craft kits

Back in the day, Easter decorations were teiggy things you'd found in your own garden or nicked from the park, and home blown/decorated eggs hung on it.

PinkSyCo · 17/04/2022 06:58

You don’t get endless adverts for Easter. Shops aren’t decorated for it and you don’t get everyone and their dog asking if you’re all ready for Christmas two months beforehand.

GoFishandChips · 17/04/2022 07:03

I'm sure there was a thread on boxing day this year with someone complaining they had seen Easter eggs in the shops.

I’ve noticed a few Easter wreaths made of mini eggs on front doors.
springtimeishereagain · 17/04/2022 07:09

I agree that shops start preparing for it earlier each year. A few weeks ago a local garden centre emailed about booking its Santa grotto tickets. 🙄😱 I thought it was an April fool. Far too early!!

nameisnotimportant · 17/04/2022 09:44

Because I bloody love hot cross buns and wish they were sold year round
