To ask about your torn meniscus?

I’m fat, 44, and thought my painful knee was arthritis.

However the pain was persistent and the doctor was concerned so he referred me for an MRI and I have a torn meniscus.

I’ve been referred to the MSK Clinic so will have physio but surgery is apparently a possibility.

I just wondered if your tear mended itself? Improved etc?

Im utterly exhausted by the pain, I feel like a pill bottle and I’ve been prescribed strong codeine and naproxen and I just feel totally knocked out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t believe Meniscus tears can really heal. I tore one a number of years ago and has (successful) surgery to stop it rubbing. My other one has since torn (been torn for 3 years now). It doesn’t bother me that much or very often. But the consultant I the best person for advice - and should be discussing Physio options and outcomes.

Thank you. I’m having my first physio session on Thursday so hopefully will get some assistance.

Bumping this slightly old thread from April this year? How is it going now? Interested to hear because I have just got back from A&E on crutches with torn meniscus

Well I did the physio but it took a while to feel any benefits.

I’d say after 6 weeks the pain wasn’t as acute and that’s where I am now.

I have some bad days, some better. I still have a slight limp and stairs are tricky.

I’m still quite unstable which can take me by surprise but on the whole it’s improved a lot. An unexpected change in direction or jolt is very painful.

The cold snap has been tricky but generally speaking I can manager without painkillers every day and otc are fine most of the time.

Hope you are ok @LimitIsUp I was stunned at how painful it was at times.

Update sounds encouraging - glad it is getting there albeit slowly. Yes re the pain - yesterday it was so intense it made me nauseous!

I tore mine in July 2018. They tried to rehab it through physio but I still had lots of pain and moments where it just collapsed so in May 2019 I had surgery. It took about a year of physio after before I was without pain even though I’d gotten really strong w the physio, but it’s been fine ever since.

Goodness - that sounds like it's a long painful chapter. Glad it is better now

Thanks. The post surgery rehab was weird because I quite quickly got to walking around again and then could single leg press my body weight within a few months but it took ages to be totally pain free.
