Who's right about taking wine?

Going to dinner at a friend's house. I grab a bottle of fizzy wine from the fridge because I know that friend likes to drink fizzy. DH and I wonder where this particular bottle came from. Did these same friends bring it last time they came here? Not sure.
DH: Well, we can't take that one in case they gave it to us, it would be rude to return it.
Me: If they did bring it it's perfect to take because it's one that they chose and so presumably like.

Who's right?

YABU - you can't return someone's wine to them
YANBU - it makes sense to take a bottle of something they like

They won't remember they gave it to you. Unless it was yesterday....

DysmalRadius · 16/04/2022 20:31

They don't have to know it's exactly the same bottle, assuming it's not exceedingly rare! I can't imagine they would say anything if it was one they had brought to you, but if they did you can just say you brought it to theirs because you knew they liked it!

ModerationInEverything · 16/04/2022 20:32

YABU. I agree with DH. It looks like saying, I didn't like this crap you brought so I'm giving it back.

Longdistance · 16/04/2022 20:33

How would she know it’s the exact same bottle?

FlissyPaps · 16/04/2022 20:33

Personally, I’d feel a bit awkward if it was the same one and they’d realised. So would just nip to the shop for some more.

But, chances are they probably wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

Blueeilidh · 16/04/2022 20:34

As long as it isn't something rare that they would know was the exact bottle they brought our would be really difficult for you to get hold of another bottle.

Flamingoose · 16/04/2022 20:46

No, it wasn't special or rare - and of course it doesn't really matter. Just DH and I bickering amicably about it.

I wish I had this problem but wine doesn’t survive long enough in my fridge Confused

gamerchick · 16/04/2022 20:52

They won't know and obviously it's something they like, with the added bonus oflts freed up room in your fridge. Wins all round imo.

Ipadflowers · 16/04/2022 21:06

Why would he think that? You write you grab a bottle of fizzy wine like you’ve more than one bottle. Is it the only bottle you Have and it’s sat there since they came?

ThinWomansBrain · 16/04/2022 21:08

You like them so much you remembered their favourite wine - how thoughtful Grin

LeastofLeicester · 16/04/2022 21:11

If it's lambrini...no. They clearly palmed it off and you and giving it back would seem passive aggressive.

If it's an average prosseco...fine. If they say anything just say, yes we liked the bottle you gave us so much we bought more.

SpeedofaSloth · 16/04/2022 21:12

YANBU

RosiePosieDozy · 16/04/2022 21:15

Just take it. Don't overthink it. You think they'll like it so take it.

If they question it, all you have to do is tell them the truth...you saw it in the fridge and thought they'd like it. They probably wouldn't question it anyway as it's not obviously the same bottle.

notanothertakeaway · 16/04/2022 21:18

If it's cheap rose that they dumped on you, then fair play for taking it back to them

But mostly, I would think if it came from.a supermarket / major supplier, they may not recognise if it's the same brand they brought to you on a previous visit

SnowingInApril · 16/04/2022 21:24

I wouldn’t risk this personally. It does look like you are returning a shit bottle. Grab something else.

belimoo · 16/04/2022 21:26

YABU I would find this rude.

AntarcticTern · 16/04/2022 21:28

YABU. They probably won't remember, but if they do it's rude.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 16/04/2022 21:30

Same.

I try and take what I know my host like so can't see the problem

curlii103 · 16/04/2022 21:31

Ynbu, who would realise or care. Even if it is the same id assume youd remembered and bought another bottle.

Vsirbdo · 16/04/2022 21:35

If someone brought over the same wine I’d taken to their house i’d probably think they’d purposefully chosen it because they know I like it. Although when people bring wine to mine I normally open it while they’re there.

Whetheryouthinkyoucan · 16/04/2022 21:45

I’d take it.

“We bought this, someone gave us a bottle and we really enjoyed it, so thought you might too!”

Then either they reply
“Yes, us, we love it too! Thank you”

Or

“Oh great, thanks, we shall give it a try”.
