Should we go to A&E?

Hi,

My mother has a large infected cyst on the shoulder down to her arm pit. She’s been on antibiotics for 3 weeks.

It’s just burst and is gushing pus and blood. Is this something we need to go to A&E for to have drained properly, or is there an alternative? I’m worried about it getting even more infected but she is very reluctant to go to A&E.

Waiting on a call back from 111.

Thank you!

Hi all,

Back from A&E. They said we made the correct decision. It had to be cut open and drained - loads of grossness came out 🤢

It has been packed with gauze and is quite sore atm. I am very glad we went when we did as it was absolutely heaving by the time we left.

Thanks everyone for encouraging my mother to go Smile

Incidentally, @Sexnotgender it did look and smell an awful lot like lumpy cheese sauce….

Late to the party pleased this is sorted.
This happened to me in February although it never actually burst- but yeah most def an a&e job. Mine also had to be drained.

Anyway best warn her that assuming it’s an open wound it will take a while to heal and she’ll need regular dressing changes. They never told me this at the time. I was discharged after nearly 6 weeks. No pain though just hassle.

I will never not be gobsmacked at the weird sort of ‘advice’ people dish out on here, and the way some people have a pathological need to warm people against seeking medical help on pain of death. 🤷🏼‍♀️
