Increasing petrol costs - so I’m actively cutting driving and walking so much more than ever

Increasing energy costs - so I don’t think I’ve ever been more aware of lights off, putting on an extra jumper rather than spinning the heating upwards

Increasing food costs - much more mindful with what I’m buying and much more thoughtful with my cooking and eating

Anyone else?

Vis a vis the environment. I have just bought a shampoo bar. £7 Shock. They will have to come down in price to take off.

Manekinek0 · 16/04/2022 17:44

@RosesAndHellebores Alberto Balsam do a shampoo bar for £2.50. Lathers up well and lasts for ages.

ememem84 · 16/04/2022 17:46

@Optimisiticcautiouslyso

So is any thread on holidays also tone deaf?
Probably. You’re not allowed to have a good time at all

I second this. It’s brilliant
@Agrudge 80 hour weeks for my husband, 60 hour weeks for me, working around 4 kids. Who do you think should be doing more?
That's over £5k a month before tax if you're both on minimum wage. You need a budgeting app

veevee04 · 16/04/2022 18:13

Biscuit Confused Very tone deaf OP you must be wealthy and comfortable. There are millions of people in this country who were already on the breadline before inflation hit. I'm genuinely worried how they are going to cope next winter.

Lesperance · 16/04/2022 18:14
@707smile please do not use the term tone deaf. From the mother of a deaf child. Thank. You.
Tone deaf means you can't hear musical pitch. You should have checked, because you clearly didn't know. It doesn't mean not being able to hear. Nobody should apologize for using English properly.

Lesperance · 16/04/2022 18:15

@Itsthedramamick

Jeez, ease off on the OP bashing! There’s not much balance on the thread purely from the backlash I suspect should someone dare to say, actually OP , yes we’ve been a bit more aware. Take your anger elsewhere and not out on the OP.
OP has posted in AIBU and this often happens when somebody posts a very poorly written first post with an inflammatory title.
Lesperance · 16/04/2022 18:18
@707smile thank you. I am sorry to hear about the OCD and I know you get what I mean when people use the term in an obtuse way.
When people use the word colour blind, people who are blind are not offended, are they? Because that would be stupid. Tone deaf is exactly the same. It doesn't mean not being able to hear, at all, it means not being able to hear tones.

LakieLady · 16/04/2022 18:27

We are extremely fortunate, there is no denying it but we were only the other day worrying about the fact that even if cash strapped families stop heating their homes, they will still have to pay double the standing charge and it's heinously regressive to think people will be paying more whilst unable to use their heating

I agree. How can people make economies if they're paying 40-50p a day in standing charges for something they can't afford to use? I think it's really unfair.

For someone on a low income, £15 a month just for the privilege of being connected to the mains is a significant spend.

NippyWoowoo · 16/04/2022 18:29

@PurpleDaisies

This is utterly tone deaf.
This. It's insufferable. And probably why we'll never have change. Because people just think 'oh what a positive!' And let the govt lose control of the situation and get away with more and more.

Soon we'll be homeless not being able to afford rent and they'll be pleased to be reducing their carbon footprint from living in a tent.

Longcovid21 · 16/04/2022 18:58

When people use the word colour blind, people who are blind are not offended, are they?

Err no, because people use it in the correct context, not as a metaphor for not reading the room correctly. Also tone deaf means not being able to hear different tones. Not as it is used here to mean lacking empathy.
Are you tone deaf about the use of the term tone deaf? .

Longcovid21 · 16/04/2022 19:02

Tone deaf means you can't hear musical pitch. You should have checked, because you clearly didn't know. It doesn't mean not being able to hear. Nobody should apologize for using English properly.

Your ignorance staggers me! You think not hearing pitches and hearing loss are different things? My son has a condition where he cannot hear certain pitches. Believe me, I am very well educated about hearing loss.

The term tone deaf remains a lazy and inappropriate metaphor for a lack of empathy or not "reading the room".

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 19:10

@Longcovid21

Would you never say to anyone “I went in to the meeting blind” or someone was “blind to a point” because wrong to say when people suffer blindness?
Or to exclaim “I’m pulling my hair out” about your toddler when people suffer from Trichotillomania
Or I’m going to “binge” on a box set when people suffer from Binge eating disorders

I could go on.

Posters called me tone death. Whilst I disagree with the sentiment! The expression is within a context that renders it completely irrelevant to dead people

That adds up to £4920 a week at minimum wage….

But seriously no one is getting offended by somebody calling someone "uncool" lame

Longcovid21 · 16/04/2022 19:16

Op it conflates deafness and ignorance. That's why it's not a nice phrase.

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 19:24

But being tone deaf is not the same as deafness. It’s very different indeed. Tone deaf means you can’t identify differences in notes. You can hear them though.

This is a very poorly thought out thread. Wealthy or comfortably off people can see this as just that a reminder to consume less. For people who cannot afford food and bills this is a nightmare. It is really unpleasant and tasteless to post a thread like this. You really should be ashamed. Some people are already struggling to heat or eat. This makes that choice harder.
