To have found increasing costs making a positive impact?

Increasing petrol costs - so I’m actively cutting driving and walking so much more than ever

Increasing energy costs - so I don’t think I’ve ever been more aware of lights off, putting on an extra jumper rather than spinning the heating upwards

Increasing food costs - much more mindful with what I’m buying and much more thoughtful with my cooking and eating

Anyone else?

Yes....we are more careful now with everything, food waste close to zero

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 10:52

It’s going to have positive impact on the environment too.
Overall it just seems people are being a lot more mindful and aware

OP posts:
purplemunkey · 16/04/2022 10:54

I'm sure it's lovely for you to be able to treat this as a 'mindfulness' experience. I probably would have thought about the impact it has on other people who aren't quite so lucky before posting something so silly.

dudsville · 16/04/2022 10:54

My OH always left all the lights blazing, now he doesn't. I'm annoyed it took this to effect change, but glad something has!

PurpleDaisies · 16/04/2022 10:54

This is utterly tone deaf.

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 10:55

Of course
But I don’t think every thread has to be full of disclaimers

I think there’s a large group of people, myself included, that previously spent and drove without much thought

But now ARE thinking and that’s a positive

Please don’t always seek out the negatives in a thread

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 16/04/2022 10:55

What you are calling “mindful” I would call “terrified about how to pay the bills”.

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 10:57

@PurpleDaisies

Yes for some

But for others - no this is not the case

Why does every thread have to be full of disclaimers

I feel desperate fully for those acutely suffering. But some of use aren’t “acutely suffering” but we are noticeably feeling it and responding accordingly

OP posts:
grapewines · 16/04/2022 10:58

You're mindful, I'm terrified. What you're doing now is how many of us have lived for years.

But good for you, I guess.

Schmz · 16/04/2022 10:59

Your mindful and thoughtful lifestyle shift for others is experienced as terror / panic and despair….
For them it’s about struggling to survive not reflection on the concept of change -

Yep you tone deaf !

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/04/2022 10:59

What youre describing is nothing new for many people.

Its fine if you have the wriggle room in terms of time and head space. Not everyone does.

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 11:00

So is any thread on holidays also tone deaf?

OP posts:
Schmz · 16/04/2022 11:00

Apologies for my tone deaf comment -
Hearing issues should not be used as a derogatory comment - generally sorry about that.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 16/04/2022 11:01

How can you think people not being able to afford basic needs as " mindful "
Are you always this self centred?
Have a fucking Biscuit

WhiteFire · 16/04/2022 11:01

I've pretty much always done that, not always from a financial pov but just not being wasteful.

ivykaty44 · 16/04/2022 11:02

Insulation needs to be provided in homes and for those on a low income mit should be free & mandatory

Fresh vegetables and unprocessed food needs to be capped in price and ultra processed food taxed to supplement the fresh vegetables

But most of all you really don’t understand the affect of rising inflation on those living on minimum wage

BookkeeperBobby · 16/04/2022 11:04

Well no, because holidays aren't caused by energy wholesalers and providers engaging in cartel like behaviour to be met with fuck all pushback from our government cabinet of millionaires.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/04/2022 11:06

We have rejigged our plans and brought forward putting up solar power on the back of increased energy prices. And I was the biggest culprit for whacking the heating up before I put on slippers and a jumper. So, I can definitely see your point but you are a braver poster than I am to frame a thread this way.

BookkeeperBobby · 16/04/2022 11:06

This thread reminds me of that fucking awful "poem" people were sharing at the start of lockdown about how lovely it is to stay at home.

Porkmore · 16/04/2022 11:07

We were living like that before. There's no wiggle room and we're fucked

Optimisiticcautiouslyso · 16/04/2022 11:08

How much are solar panels? Do you have to be south facing to really benefit?

There will be some people who are able to find positives in this situation, just like some people felt that Covid helped them to realign their priorities. But a much higher proportion of people have found the pandemic extremely difficult.

But what you call ‘disclaimers’ most people call acknowledging privilege. It would have taken sixty seconds to reframe your post in a sympathetic way that acknowledged others are suffering and I cannot see why you wouldn’t take the time to do that.

Snog · 16/04/2022 11:09

Tone deaf. Your title is really insensitive and inappropriate OP.

Why not start a thread about things that can be done to save energy.

namechange30455 · 16/04/2022 11:09

@purplemunkey

This!

Some people were already doing all those things and are now totally fucked and can't afford their bills. Good for you OP that you're being less wasteful, but it's a bit "let them eat cake" of you to share that, isn't it? And probably says something about your privileged social group. People who are now relying on food banks, not eating so their kids can eat, etc, aren't able to be any "more mindful".

Burgoo · 16/04/2022 11:10

I think the fact that you drove, ate and whacked on the heating with little thought shows a complete lack of how the average person in the UK lives. Millions have to hope they can pay the bills and eat, every single month. Some don't have a choice to walk, if they live in places close to where they want to go. They have to hope that they can make it on a few litres.

I've people coming to be in tears because they have literally nothing in the cupboards. What they wouldn't give to be able to cut back on what they eat. They leave NOTHING when they eat because they have a can of beans and one slice of bread. They don't have the luxury to not even notice this stuff. For people I see every day, they have to sit in the dark at night because their funds don't stretch enough to cover the electricity metre and they don't have a few quid to throw in it.

Can you (OP) see that this is normal for hundreds of thousands of people across the UK?
