To wish they still had intervals at the cinema for long films?

I watched Secrets of Dumbledore yesterday and although not the longest film I've seen (think it was about 2 1/2 hours plus the annoying 30 mins trailers) I wish they still had intervals so you can nip to the toilet, adjust your back from the restrictive seat and move about a bit so you don't get Rigor Mortis when the film ends and you try to stand up or even get a coffee to keep you awake if the film is a bit slow.
Does anyone else miss the intervals and wonder why they stopped them?
Guessing it's a money thing to fit more films in the day and the 15 min breaks would add up to probably 1 less showing a day but surely the amount people would spend on snacks on the break would make up for it?

We still have intervals at my local cinema but it is quite unique, during the interval we have a man play the organ :)

TheLadyDIdGood · 15/04/2022 14:53

I'd rather have an interval in the middle than have to sit through 30 mins of adverts and trailers first.

MurmuratingStarling · 15/04/2022 14:53

Yes and no.

Yes - as it would break up the film and give you a break to stretch your legs/have a pee etc.

No - because all 500 people watching the film will all be rushing to the food/drink counter, and the loo at the same time!

But... YES just wins for me, as at least you have a choice then, to pop out during the film, or wait til the break. (If there IS a break, they should still have the drinks/snacks available during the film.)

This massively irks me, and for that reason I don't usually go in til the film is starting. So if they say the start time is 5.35pm, I will go in at 5.55pm to 6.00pm.

The interval wasnt in the middle of a long film. there was a short pre film and then the full film. It was a 3 hour experience.

VariationsonaTheme · 15/04/2022 14:55

Those of you who dislike the trailers/adverts, why don’t you just arrive 20 minutes later?

ouch321 · 15/04/2022 14:56

No use washrooms before and after film.

There was ALWAYS a break (intermission as it was known,) in every film in my cinema pre early 1990s. Even if the film was only 1 hr 45 mins long.

Our local independent cinema doesn’t have adverts before it great.

Personally I wouldn’t like an interval

mydogisthebest · 15/04/2022 15:03

No I wouldn't want an interval. Once I am engrossed in a film I don't want any disruption.

I don't really like the interval in theatres to be honest. I don't feel the need to have a drink half way through a performance nor do I ever need to use the loo.

Our cinema is literally pitch black. They used to have low level lighting but now it’s absolutely awful trying to find and manoeuvre yourself into the seat!
ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 15/04/2022 15:18

it is just that the films are shit now and even the 90 min/2hr ones seem interminable.

I haven't found my will to live again since I lost it 30mins into Encanto last December.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 15/04/2022 15:21

Our local cinema still has an interval and someone comes round to sell ice-creams Grin

Lovemusic33 · 15/04/2022 15:22

Yes, used to live the cinema as a child because in the interval there was a ice cream and snack cart 🤣.

Same. The interval is entirely for the actors’ convenience (which is fine!), I’d rather be engrossed for the duration.

The narrative flow of a film would be interrupted with a break.

Chely · 15/04/2022 15:41

Nope and it really pisses me off when dh pauses movies at home for a toilet or brew break.

South Lakes?
LubaLuca · 15/04/2022 15:44

I like the trailers and I'd get annoyed having to wait for a few hundred people to empty their bladders and buy something to refill them with halfway through a film. I don't like having to pause films at home.

Hbh17 · 15/04/2022 15:47

No, because I want to get stuck into the film.
Plus, eating in the cinema is vile so really don't want an interval to encourage people to buy more food!

Imonlyhereforalaugh · 15/04/2022 15:51

I used to go to the cinema loads as a child in the 80s and I never remember their being an interval? There was a lady that came in and stood at the front with ice creams while the film was on but never an interval.

I agree, just don't sit there while 500 years worth of adverts are on before the film. Is it any good BTW. My kids want to see it and I CBA with it TBH.

C152 · 15/04/2022 15:51

I wish they still did this - and the staff still came around with a tray of ice cream tubs for you to choose from!

Readeatcake · 15/04/2022 15:52

My local cinema does this, plays an interval version and non interval version of the longer films 2+ hours

I don't go to those ones as I prefer to watch the film in one go but it's there for people who do like it

Kanaloa · 15/04/2022 15:57

I personally hate breaks - trailers in TV spoil it for me. When I worked at a cinema we had intermissions only for certain special showings, sometimes we had screenings of west end shows and they had intermissions but a 3.5 hour marvel movie didn’t. We also had to usher the special screenings and do ice cream which we never ever did otherwise so maybe it was to make it more of an experience.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 15/04/2022 15:59

@Fuckingfuckssake - correct Grin

Withinthewhirlwind · 15/04/2022 16:09

@zeroFuchsGiven - that must be the Kinema! Smile
