Private doctor home visit for stomach bug?

Redhot24 · 15/04/2022 00:56

Hi

I’ve been suffering with an awful stomach bug for a couple days now - I haven’t been able to keep any food or water down.
Really starting to struggle as feeling very faint but a few sips of dioralyte and I need to go straight away.
Had something similar a few years ago and the hospital gave me a drip which fixed it straight away.

I don’t have the energy to wait for 5/6 hours in the hospital nobody to take me and can’t drive as will faint. I can’t think of anything worse and not good use of nhs resources as I’m not dying.

I have private health cover.
Are there any private doctor visits in london? If they can give a drip at home?

TIA

Phone for an ambulance I would

I
Hope you feel better soon x

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/04/2022 01:01

Keep sipping the Dioralyte, even if you go straight afterwards, you will be absorbing it,in fact it says on the instructions to drink it after a movement.

Ballsaque · 15/04/2022 01:03

Tummy bugs can last a few days. I had norovirus once and saw a GP about 5 days in who just said to wait it out.

Redhot24 · 15/04/2022 01:10

Thanks. I will keep sipping, just awful when you have to keep running to the toilet you just give up on trying to stay hydrated.

@worriedaboutmoney2022 If I don’t feel better in a couple days I’ll probably end up getting a taxi to the hospital x just can’t do the long wait at the moment

You poor thing Flowers

I could be wrong but for a drip I think you need medical supervision.

When I was abroad and had similar symptoms, a doctor gave me an injection which helped considerably.

I would phone 111 and ask for advice.

Or your insurance medical package might contain an emergency number?

Good luck and hope you feel better soon Flowers

MrOllivander · 15/04/2022 01:14

When you say sip, try literally a teaspoon at a time
That's the only way I coped with norovirus, it was awful as I was so thirsty but 5ml was the most I could manage and it really helped

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/04/2022 01:16

Keep sipping and drinking anything else you fancy too, orange squash is good. Just because you're going all the time doesn't men the fluid isn't doing you good. You MUST drink.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/04/2022 01:16

And I wouldn't go to the hospital after 2 days of a stomach bug.

Skinnydogz · 15/04/2022 01:17

Private hospital won't see you as they dont do emergency so not sure they would see you. Try and keep sipping dioralyte and if you aren't getting Better then 111 but you could pass it on to the hcp you see unfortunately. Hope you get better soon

That looks amazing. Can't see the prices on there even though they say they are always upfront clicking in the price info doesn't work Grin

111
are you alone OP?
have you tried nibbling tiny fragment of rice cake or dry toast? or a cracker.
you may need to line your stomach in order to keep fluid down.
it is importangt not to become dehydrated.
best to ring 111 for advice.
good luck OP.

Redhot24 · 15/04/2022 01:29

I had a really bad bug, I ate an ice cube at a time ... then a little bite of dry toast every so often
I would sometimes bring it back up but sometimes not ...
I think it lasted around 5 days

Spinakker · 15/04/2022 06:52

You can call 111 anyway and ask what they advise. Its good to have your name and details on record incase you do have to go into hospital or they can send an ambulance. If you feel you do need to go to A and E maybe very early in the morning is a good time to go?

Coffeeonmytoffee · 15/04/2022 06:55

If you have private health insurance ring them and ask. They may have a GP service.

Hbh17 · 15/04/2022 06:58

You really don't need any treatment. I've never heard of anyone calling a doctor for a stomach bug - please don't waste their time! Just wait a few days & you'll be fine.

gogohm · 15/04/2022 07:00

Have you tried the brat diet? Banana brown rice apple sauce y buttered toast. Little amounts plus sip water. 72 hours is not uncommon if it's norovirus. I personally wouldn't call for help yet

RealHousewifeOfEastLondon · 15/04/2022 07:17

I have just recovered from the worst stomach bug! In fact it was the worst I have felt in years! My two year old son had it too, somehow DH and DD escaped! Anyway, I had four days of constant trips to the toilet (not for vomitingSad). All I could manage was water for two days and it was coming straight through me. It felt horrendous at the time, I was starving and absolutely wiped out. The good news is it was over as quickly as it began! Two days later and I feel fine. My point is - it will pass! Hang in there!

lurker69 · 15/04/2022 07:34

If it's just a stomach bug you just need to ride it out, they wont want you turning up at a&e possibly spreading it around and i don't think a doctor you do a house call to be honest. i would try some of the advice offered here and maybe call 111 if it gets any worse! I think bugs feel so much worse at the moment as we have avoided so many germs during covid, we had a sickness bug a few weeks back and it felt like death!

Atlanticdaisies · 15/04/2022 12:34

Google IV doctors in London. They will usually dispatch a nurse to administer a drip. Doubt it's covered by private insurance though.

Severe dehydration from a stomach bug is something to be concerned about. If it goes on long enough it can cause a heart arrhythmia which can be fatal. Not common but can happen.

Not true. Depending on the cause, you can have a stomach bug that is so bad it requires hospital admission.
