To ask if anyone's read/watched American Psycho? (I need friends to discuss this with!)

I watched the film yeeears ago and didn't think much of it, but I recently rewatched it and I found it one of the best pieces of cinema I've ever watched. (And not just for Christian Bale and Jared Leto Blush). I'm currently in the middle of rereading the book and I have so many theories - it's just fascinating. I know people are put off because of the gore (in the book at least) which is completely fair enough, but I think it's so cleverly written.

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Very interesting point about AP that I missed when I first read it. If you look at the descriptions of the clothing, they are actually ridiculous and mismatching. It was a deliberate move by BEE.

I agree with a PP, Jay McInerney is definitely the superior writer. I do love AP though.

I read the book when it first came out I think I was just shocked at the violence. I reading again about five years later and understood it better a man unraveling

The film is very good Christian Bale is brilliant but I think he is more charismatic in the film in the book it feels it’s an illusion that he is

Another satirical book of that era that I think is referenced in American Psycho characters is Bonfire of the Vanities. It’s a really good book it’s applicable as much today. The film was disappointing I think wrong casting

I wouldn’t read the book again though

I’ve softened in my age to what I can read

Love Christian Bale in the film. The book is very, very graphic - the film is tame in comparison.

Also a geeky English teacher who ADORES both book and film. For advanced higher English dissertation, I wrote about American Psycho, Trainspotting and a Clockwork Orange. I am utterly obsessed with these gritty dystopia might just happen (1984 anyone) kind of stories.
@Philisophigal - I’ve been meaning to read Rules of Attraction but haven’t yet got round to it.

“This is not an exit” stuck with me, too! I don’t know what it is about that phrase, but it really touched me.
I think Rules of Attraction is his best book , closely followed by Less Than Zero

I’ve seen the film a couple of times and I think the ending is a ? and left for the individual viewer to decide if it really happened or was it all in his imagination.

Another similar film is Shutter Island which again in my opinion the Ending is left open for our own interpretation.

The film is much better than the book, but I can’t watch the film these days either, too upsetting. The book I find is vacuous in parts, which may be deliberate, but it gets repetitive.
