Aibu neighbours camera records my garden?

So I'm end terrace dead end with residential parking to my side. The neighbours camera is to keep an eye on their cars but it records a fair amount of my garden. Her sister said to me I saw you on the camera in your garden where did you get ur bench from. I understand the garden will be overlooked but I feel strange knowing its being recorded.

Aibu to put up some trees to give me a bit more privacy in my own garden? (also some suggestions would be great as I have no idea at all where to start)

Think they are breaking the law recording your garden, something to do with having to be registered for data protection?
I would be asking them to change the angle if their camera.

AnonForThisOne87 · 14/04/2022 20:40

@Fairyliz ooo really? I didn't realise that I have spoken to them a little bit previously but they seem a bit confrontational I wouldn't want trouble

I'd grow bamboo. It grows quickly and will block their view quite effectively.

FWIW, they are being incredibly rude. Its bad enough that their camera covers your garden, but then telling you that they can see you is bang out of order.

Llindsey85 · 14/04/2022 20:44

Could you offer to put the camera on your wall/fence so they have a 'better view' of their car and explain you feel a bit odd having the camera looking into your garden?

As mentioned before they cannot do this but it might be good to sort it out in a friendly way

Yes really and they have to move it - or you could claim damages from them. Cheeky sods.

That’s a good suggestion

This could be a good solution to avoid any confrontation as they would actually get a better view and would solve the issue of them seeing my garden I don't know how I would broach the topic though...I wish this kind of stuff could be anonymous

My camera system can have areas electronically blanked using software.
Setting a camera up so it doesn't cover any neighbouring property in a residential area just by siting is pretty difficult.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 21:34

This is a really difficult area, as so many people have cameras now. We need clearer guidance around this as so many people seem to think it is fine to record anything they want.

I have recently moved and the neighbour's existing camera pointed across our front garden. I decided not to speak to them but to put up screening instead. Sometimes it is easier not to discuss. They wanted the camera to point at their car. I don't really get it myself as it is a low crime area and a very low value car!

As soon as the screening went up I felt better.

Get some bum flashing gnomes for your garden. Ring the council for advice..

Our nightmare neighbours have 7 cctv cameras and 3 overlook our back garden police aren't interested and ICO have been beyond useless - good luck as amongst other things its made our lives a misery

Shock

Is there no way to screen them - are they very high?

I feel very sorry for you with this. Have you take any legal advice? As it is not a rush issue, you could wait for a free university legal clinic place or something to get some advice on this.

Onthedowns · 14/04/2022 23:11

No we can't afford civil advice at moment. Ww have been subject to many other issues with them over 4 years but police won't entertain harrasement. We can't screen one is placed on top of a dormer roof and no way of escaping.

It's an utter shambles it appears that you can literally do what you like with cctv and no one cares 🤷🏼‍♀️

You could investigate a strategically positioned sail.

You can access free legal advice at your nearest University law clinic.

There was a case a few months ago where one female neighbour successfully sued the other, because their 'ring' doorbell recorded her coming/going from her house everyday. It was proved that her privacy was breached. Be careful peeps where you have these cameras set up. Anything recording your neighbours property/garden can be an issue.

Acatnamedfox · 15/04/2022 01:39

Definitely against the law, I believe you’re not allowed to film others property?! - someone correct me
But in this day and age I’d be grateful for the free extra security as long as there was no malicious intent.

Oh wow. We set up a camera at mil house and the community police officer came to check after a neighbour complained. She was displaying bad behaviour towards mil and that's why we got the camera as a deterrent and she actually had the gall to report it. It wasn't covering any of her garden though only mils
TigerLilyTail · 16/04/2022 13:53

I would say something like “Hello, this is really awkward but your sister mentioned the other day that your camera was recording my garden. I wondered if it would be possible to move the camera to the wall in the other side as I don’t feel comfortable about it and want to protect my privacy.”

If they are arses about it, you can get some bamboo screens really cheaply that you can place against the wall to block the camera.

Don’t plant bamboo in your garden though as it’s extremely invasive.

I'm not sure the council can offer any advice on 'bum flashing' gnomes. Strange advice
wantingeasylife · 16/04/2022 14:47

Hi OP, I currently have this issue. Nightmare neighbours had a camera pointed towards my garden and I called the police. The police told them they were breaking privacy laws and had to take the camera down. The next day the camera was back up but pointed into their garden. I called the police again and they said the camera did capture our garden due to the angle lens however, as the camera was pointed in their garden, it was apparently fine! Many issues since and going down the legal route now and also looking to move :(

Hopefully you can resolve the issue amicably, some of the suggestions above are good.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 23/07/2024 06:48

I have same issue re neighbours camera recording my garden... neighbour actually tried giving me advise re my new dog😳 I'm thinking about putting up a garden sail, not for sun but to get some privacy back. Has anyone put one of these up for privacy. Can they be left all year round?
