To drink bottled water?

I live in a really hard water area in a block of new build flats.
The flats plumbing is awful and basically when everyone moved on, everyone’s boilers kept breaking so the housing association did something where they add something to the water to make it softer but it tastes absolutely foul, it stinks of chemicals and it’s really horrible. It’s not just the usual horrible south east tap water taste it’s way worse, filter jug doesn’t get rid of the taste. I don’t know what they add it’s safe to drink apparently but really gross.
my kids will drink the tap water because of the taste and neither can I.
But bottled water is obviously so bad for the environment
Is there some kind of obvious alternative that I am missing?

You can buy it in cans, which are at least recyclable but probably way more expensive.

Glass bottles? They're not the panacea though as they use more energy to transport.

Can you cope with the water taste in tea and coffee or do you notice it in that I used to take bottled water to my mum's as her tap water tasted vile but they changed something and it's not so bad now.

Tried a brita filter or similar?

Can you get a filter fitted to the plumbing? www.popularmechanics.com/home/interior-projects/a28212879/best-water-filters/

Boil it to get rid of any nasties then let it cool and see if that helps?
if bottled water is your only alternative then buy the massive ones you can get that way you will be using less bottles.
or take water bottles when out and about and fill up at free water stations.
