Can walk 20 minutes easily enough or is it too far?

Twenty minutes? Of course.

SockQueen · 14/04/2022 12:04

An adult 20 minutes distance, or a 3 year olds?

My DS2 is almost 3, he could quote happily potter for 20 minutes, but dedicated walking towards a destination for that long could be tricky - he'd get bored/distracted

Barkingmadhouse · 14/04/2022 12:06

Too far? Of course a 3 year old should walk well in excess of 20 minutes (unless physically disabled)

AHungryCaterpillar · 14/04/2022 12:06

Yes my son was out the pram at 3 and I do a 20 min school run he use to walk there and back so I could take the others to school (occasionally we would get the bus back but we always walked there)

FTEngineerM · 14/04/2022 12:06

I take my 21 month old to the shop and back that’s about 20 minutes he walks the whole time except in the shop because he picked EVERYTHING up

bakewellbride · 14/04/2022 12:06

My son was walking into town at that age and it took half an hour. We did it 3 times a week so he soon got used to it!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 14/04/2022 12:07

Yes, but not at a fast pace.

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/04/2022 12:08

Of course. Just allow more time than you would for an older child or adult.

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/04/2022 12:09

DD is just 3 and wouldn’t think twice about walking for an hour.

pictish · 14/04/2022 12:09

Absolutely.

Blurp · 14/04/2022 12:10

They can certainly walk for 20 minutes; quite how far they'll get in that time is another matter. DD would have covered about 5 times the distance that DS would at that age.

Hugasauras · 14/04/2022 12:10

Yep, that's our walk home from nursery!

GiltEdges · 14/04/2022 12:10

It really depends on the 3 year old in question. Physically, yes most should be able to manage it. Mine would definitely get bored after 5 minutes and refuse to walk any further and I’ve yet to find anything that works reliably to make an unwilling 3 year old move, including bribes.

NerrSnerr · 14/04/2022 12:11

Yes (although of course could take longer). Mine may have moaned and said their legs are tired if we're walking somewhere like the shop or somewhere else they perceive as boring but could walk and run in the woods for hours.

SnailAndAWhale · 14/04/2022 12:11

It depends at what pace. My 3yo could walk for 20 minutes sometimes and we’ll barely make it up the road Grin

Wilkolampshade · 14/04/2022 12:13

Yes of course! Completely normal. Just allow for ample stoppage time to look at wall/cat/dog/puddle/leaf/sky etc....

Takes us 10 minutes to walk across the park with the pushchair. 40 minutes if walking as there are so many distractions!

MissChanandlerBong80 · 14/04/2022 12:40

Well time and distance are different things. Obviously a three year can walk for twenty minutes but they can’t cover the same distance as an adult could in that time. Are you asking if a three year old can walk at their own pace for twenty minutes or if they can walk the same distance as an adult could in 20 minutes but in more time?

NuffSaidSam · 14/04/2022 12:40

They should be able to (unless there is a reason they can't).

But if they've been taken everywhere in a car/buggy up until this point they may not be able to immediately. They may need to build a bit of stamina.

Vsirbdo · 14/04/2022 12:41

My 3 year old could walk for 20 minutes but to a distance that would have taken me 10 minutes. An adult 20 minute walk takes her far longer.

Mustardbay · 14/04/2022 12:42

Yes it's 20 minutes for a 3 year old to walk from the car into tescos Grin

RubiksMoose · 14/04/2022 12:45

Obviously it entirely depends on the child. My DS1 didn’t learn to walk until after he turned 2, at age 3 he was still very much needing the pushchair. DS3 on the hand is very physically able and could easy manage 20 minutes walk when he was 3

TheKeatingFive · 14/04/2022 12:46

Of course.

Brunosaiditlookslikerain · 14/04/2022 12:46

Yes walking a couple of hours in the wood or on the beach in a random ambling spirals depending on leaves/ pebbles/ twigs/ shells etc would be fine and lots of fun. Walking 20 mins in a straight line on the pavement there's no way that's happening for my 3yo and may result in everyone crying out of frustration and tiredness.
