Cover versions of songs

Just a lighthearted musing! I was listening to the radio earlier and they played Baby Can I Hold You by Boyzone. An absolute abomination when compared to the original by Tracy Chapman. The only example of a cover that I think is better than the original is Only You by Yazoo, which is far superior to the weird Flying Pickets version. Can anyone think of any more songs where the cover is better than the original?

@Secretname123

Are you me? Those were the exact two I was going to post! Can’t stand Kate Bush but love the placebo version.

Great minds!

Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb is so much better than the Pink Floyd original.

Daisychainsandglitter · 16/04/2022 04:08

Always on my mind by the pet shop boys

amillionrosepetals · 16/04/2022 12:01

Nina Simone's version of To Love Somebody.

HRTQueen · 16/04/2022 12:07

Nina Simone’s - Here comes the Sun

It makes me cry its so emotional

Fairislefandango · 16/04/2022 12:18

I agree with lots of these. I've also recently discovered Aurora's version of Oasis' 'Half The World Away', which I absolutely love.

Pink Floyd all day for me. Having said that, if Gilmour and Waters had been young men in 2004, they'd likely be dropping pills and making dance music themselves.
Jevarakh · 16/04/2022 12:25

Lost in Music by The Fall.

Funkyslippers · 16/04/2022 13:01

I heard a brilliant version of Taylor Swift's Shake it Off by a rock band with a male singer. No idea who it was but it was so good, it got me through the last few mins of my spin class!

the80sweregreat · 16/04/2022 16:14

I heard Anne Marie sing a version of ' bad habits' on radio two yesterday by Ed Sheehan and it was very good.
Dua lipa did an artic monkeys song ' do you wanna know ' and that was great too.
I like a slowed down cover version.

EverybodysALebowski · 16/04/2022 17:06

Screaming Females version of Shake It Off
Garbage and Screaming Females version of Because the Night
Cake's versions of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps and I Will Survive
And some mentioned above:
The Clash's version of I Fought The Law
Guns and Roses version of Live and Let Die

WalkingOnTheCracks · 16/04/2022 17:45

Several.

This one, for a start...

I love the Flying Pickets version!
EverybodysALebowski · 16/04/2022 17:56

hey @Funkyslippers the version of was probably by Screaming Females - the lead singer Marissa has a pretty low (and excellent voice)

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/04/2022 17:58

Kate Rusby did a really nice version of Shake It Off (didn't do the sassy rap bit in the middle, though). It wasn't better than the original all-time classic, but I really love her interpretation of Manic Monday, too.

TheProf · 16/04/2022 18:22

Erasure covering Salisbury Hill is a good one!

sillymoo64 · 16/04/2022 18:30

Mike D'Abo sang original Handbags and Gladrags also wrote it

Funkyslippers · 16/04/2022 18:30

EverybodysALebowski sadly it's not that one

liquidrevolution · 16/04/2022 18:44

David bowie is a god but i prefer the lena hall version of As the World Falls Down Blush

She does some amazing covers on her youtube channel. Its all under the Lena Hall Obsessed playlist i think.

TheOriginalEmu · 16/04/2022 19:02

@NowNowDermot

I really like the version of Seven Nation Army they're using on the Samsung(?) advert at the moment. Artists name is Zella Day and I'm slowly working my way through her other stuff now, I often seem to find new artists/music this way Smile
Ohh I need to check that out.

I think nirvana’s Man who sold the world is better.

NarcKid · 16/04/2022 19:03

I think Red, Red Wine by UB40 is better than Neil Diamond's original.

I also think Toots and the Maytals' cover of Take Me Home Country Roads is better than John Denver's original.

And Annie Lennox's cover of A Whiter Shade of Pale is sublime.

OkOkWhatsNext · 16/04/2022 19:15

Amy Winehouse’s version of Valerie

FrippEnos · 16/04/2022 19:19
