Some advice would be great

I’m booked to have marina coil fitted next Thursday but I’m not sure if to that or go back on pill

I was on mini pill I stopped thinking that was causing my low mood but my mood is still up and down being off it

I’m scared about having it fitted will I bleed afterwards I’m scared about something going wrong and it getting stuck and I’m not sure if it will make my mood worse or not

I had the copper coil fitted last summer. The doctor who fitted it struggled to insert it as my cervix was very tight, it was very painful, and then she wasn't sure if it was positioned properly in my uterus so referred me for an ultrasound to check it and told me to continue taking the combined pill until the US but I had to stop taking it because for some reason my hormones went crazy and I became very severely depressed where I couldn't cope with anything and had a mental breakdown when my dog knocked over a table lamp while my partner was working away one weekend. The doctor said the coil was copper and contained no hormones but I know it reacted badly with the pill and affected my mood severely. I was in a lot of pain for the first evening, not relieved by paracetamol or ibuprofen. Thankfully no more pain until the ultrasound which I had over a week later where they told me it wasn't positioned right and had to be replaced asap in case of injury.

The extremely low mood and wrong positioning of the coil put me off ever wanting one again so I have stuck to taking the combined pill which has always worked well for me. At least I can stop taking the pill myself when I want and not have to wait for a clinician to remove it for me - I know during the pandemic it was hassle for women to get an appointment for removal even after expiry unless it was causing them problems. The mini pill gave me extremely bad acne all over my back, chest and face so I can't take that :(

I have the copper coil.
As PP said, not fun (who knew you have a front and back cervix 😳)
It was painful for a few days post but honestly after that I don't know it's even there. Didn't change my periods.

Absolutely dreading it being taken out when the time comes but as far as it doing its job I can't complain. Short term pain for long term gain.

Speak to your nurse/ dr to discuss your options before you continue. They'll help you decide which is best for you taking in to account your medical history :)

Good luck !

With regard to your concern about bleeding on holiday; you can take norethisterone to stop that.
Mood wise it’s hard to predict but the amount of progesterone absorbed systemically is very low.

I have a copper coil, I love mine, I'm never paranoid about pregnancy, it hurt a bit on insertion for me(different for everybody, I would advise taking a couple of pain killers an hour before), but my periods are back to normal, my moods are back to normal too. I had a bit of bleeding for about 3 days afterwards :)

Pros were: very very light periods, and then none for a while with no pain, impact from hormones was lower, no need to worry about forgetting to take a pill or faffing around with condoms
Cons: uncomfortable to fit/take out, but I have a difficult cervix apparently 🙄, had thrush permanently after never having it before, barely any sex drive

I had it taken out due to the thrush and also because I was TTC my second. I wouldn't have another but that's a personal decision.

Some people swear by them and I think I was unlucky so maybe try it and you can always have it taken out. Take paracetamol an hour before helps the fitting process

Copper coil here - heavy periods. But otherwise no issue. I did the copper as I heard the pill/injection has putting weight on / mood swingsas a potential side effect.

I had no option other than mirena, the pills meant I bled constantly for 5months!! That said since having it fitted, which was painful, I'm still cramping almost everyday, bleeding every 14 days and it must catch a nerve or something on occasion as I've even been admitted from a and e with the pain. I'd have it out but know then I'm back to very heavy periods with pain. So the benefits are for me bleeding is slightly less and I don't have to worry so much with sex, but I doubt I'll have another in 4 years time!
