...to pay an 11 year old to mow the lawn?

Would it be reasonable to pay my 11 year old nephew £10 to mow the lawn? It's not a massive garden but is on a slight slope.

Ours were fighting over the chance to mow the grass at that age.

jytdtysrht · 14/04/2022 16:20

I wouldn’t. He’s a child under 12 so it’s possibly even illegal. Have you see the blade on the base and considered the damage it could inflict? Particularly as you say there’s a slope.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 14/04/2022 16:27

Illegal 😂😂

Definitely, I put together a work package plan and a task briefing. Always make sure they sign off on it too. Also need to think of any tax implications and pension contributions, I suppose it depends if he’s set up his own company? It really is a minefield these days 😂[/quote]
Has he done his equality and diversity training and his unconscious bias assessment?

If his parents are ok with it why not? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pixiedust1234 · 14/04/2022 17:52

Good grief yes. Make sure you teach them how to safety use your lawnmower as it might be different to home but why wouldn't you? I used to do ironing as a 9yr old as part of weekly chores. Washing the car (20p) and mowing the lawn (50p) was how I got extra pocket money. Started off with the push mower which took 3 hours but when I was 14 we got a petrol mower. It felt like christmas Grin

LoveSpringDaffs · 14/04/2022 18:03

Depends on his size/type of mower/what his parents say/if he wants to etc

'Not massive' is subjective, but unless it's Kew Gardens £11 is probably fine/brilliant.

Is it a one off or regular? Can he get there by himself? (If not it might be a PITA for his parents to make the commitment)

But no reason why you can ASK, but I'd ask his parents first!

I miss having a garden & I miss the 'incidental' exercise I got from it. I enjoyed mowing the lawn (more than I realised at the time 🤣🤣)

Mummy1608 · 14/04/2022 18:09

I think it's a great idea and I wish I had an 11yo nephew!

Minimum wage is £4.81 ph for under 18s so I would make sure you pay at least that much tbf

Wow good to know! I guess they can be dangerous can't they
Blueeyedgirl21 · 14/04/2022 19:35

That may well be true but what are you going to do, call the police on your neighbours for having what looks like an under 12 behind the mower? Or ask for ID?!!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/04/2022 19:39

DH paid DD 9 £10 to mow our lawn. It's not a huge lawn and he did supervise.

Thethuthinang · 14/04/2022 20:07

I cut lawns at that age. I was provided with steel toe boots.

SunshinePie · 14/04/2022 20:27

Sounds dangerous. I wouldn’t be letting my kids near a lawn mower…accident waiting to happen.

LaTomatina · 14/04/2022 20:36

My dad drove a tractor at 5, I owned a van at 8. Seriously, an 11 year old can push a stupid lawn mower. People are so overprotective bo wonder we live in such a precious society these days.

This.

Caspianberg · 14/04/2022 20:41

Oh god, not at 11 years?!

Ds is 1, I was hoping he could help before then. Are you saying after another 10 years he still shouldn’t?

BertieQueen · 14/04/2022 21:07

My son was about 7/8 when he asked to mow the lawn, we had an electric mower he was able to use easily. I supervised from the patio drinking a cup of tea. He is now 12 and has mowed the lawn many times for me.

Seeline · 14/04/2022 21:26

I used to cut my Grandad's grass when I was 10 with a petrol mower that self-propelled. It was a huge garden. It was way before the days of dead man's handle. Cutting the grass in the orchard involved setting the mower in the right direction, letting it go under the low branches, running round the tree and catching it the other side! Nearly demolished the greenhouse once, but still got all my toes.

Your nephew will be fine as long as he is taught correctly.
