MASTERMIND...and the winner is a WOMAN and she's 66! Sexism at its best?

I was horrified that the headlines on the Mastermind final focused on the fact she's a women (ok I don't think there has been a woman who's won) but they also gave her age.

If it had been a man who'd won, would they have said MAN wins AND he's 66!

To me this suggests sexism and ageism.

But if, as you say, it’s the first time a woman has won, of course that’s going to be the focus. And by extension, of course they wouldn’t make a thing of the winner being a man if every other winner has been a man.

She was awesome!

StrawberryPot · 12/04/2022 09:08

I just saw the 'oldest winner' headline and assumed she must be in her 80/90s ....

AuntyPonsonby · 12/04/2022 09:09

On an alternative Mumsnet in an alternative universe: Mastermind has FINALLY been won by a woman and it's being ignored by the papers. This should be CELEBRATED. Sexism! Misogyny!

5zeds · 12/04/2022 09:09

Well if she is the only female and the oldest then that’s interesting isn’t it?

Pyri · 12/04/2022 09:10

I read this as Masterchef and thought, “thanks for the spoiler OP!”

billyt · 12/04/2022 09:12

The previous oldest woman winner was in 2017 when she was 61 so it is very sexist to highlight the same thing again.

Whereas they highlight that the youngest PERSON was a student named Jonathon. Did not say youngest man.

whywhythough · 12/04/2022 09:14

Your were horrified, were you?

No, she’s the oldest female to win.

Not the only female or the oldest person.

AdaColeman · 12/04/2022 09:37

She isn’t the first woman to win MasterMind by any means, in fact the first three winners were women.

KrisAkabusi · 12/04/2022 09:42

She's the oldest female winner. Do you think they should say that and then NOT give her age ?Confused

LetHimHaveIt · 12/04/2022 09:45

I think it's far more sexist that you didn't know there have been previous female winners, actually. I believe Nancy Dickman (an extremely nice woman; I've met her a couple of times) was heavily pregnant when she won.

I've never watched Mastermind or heard of any of these people! Blush
LetHimHaveIt · 12/04/2022 10:04

Ok?

I've never watched 'Strictly Come Dancing' in any meaningful sense, or, say, The Open is any sense whatsoever - but I could probably name half a dozen winners of each. It's called having general/pop culture/current affairs knowledge.

'Mastermind' is generally accepted to be the Rolls Royce* of UK quizzes - particularly for single entrants - and I would guess most people have heard of it and are aware of its prestige.

Given we have such resources as the Internet, it seems odd to stride on here and suggest this woman is the first winner, when it's easy to find out that that's not the case. I, for example, have just found out it is 'Dickmann' not 'Dickman' and she wasn't pregnant but a very new mum.

How is it sexist to not know the sec of previous winners? Honestly you are being ridiculous. There is very little to say about someone winning a competition. Age and sex aren’t criticisms, they’re just random facts. How old is the oldest person to win?
