To wonder why this would be requested by doctors

Can anyone give advice, Dp has received a request from haematology in local hospital for bloods. They want to test his immunity to hepatitis c and b and hiv. He has said he has no idea why.

Has anyone ever had to get their immunity checked for these, what reason was it done.

My mind is doing overtime.

Obviously doesn’t apply to him but these were offered to me by the midwife. No history of drug use so not based on risk. I’m not sure why they test for this but could be an innocent reason.

For your own peace of mind I second the PPs advice to have your own tests at a GUM clinic. At least you can be reassured about your own health then.

I hate to suggest this, but is it possible that he’s been named as a contact of someone recently been diagnosed with HIV?

SaggyBlinders · 11/04/2022 23:56

Go and get a test yourself, it'll put your mind at rest, you won't have to wait 6 weeks, you will be able to find a sexual health clinic with availability or a walk in system this week. Just say that your would like a health screen, including bloods for hepatitis and HIV, they won't bat an eyelid.

If he has cheated on you in the past, then I would take whatever he says with a pinch of salt. Best to take responsibility for your own health and get your own test.

It's probably just routine for the haematology dept before they'll see your husband, to rule out things that could easily explain his abnormal blood results. I've had various screening tests when referred to different departments it's just what they would require to be ruled out first. If your worried just give them a ring

Fraaahnces · 12/04/2022 00:11

His sudden amnesia re what the doctor says combined with past behaviour worries me more. I’d be having a frank discussion and asking whether you needed similar tests yourself - or simply going to a sexual health clinic and being screened anyway. Just for peace of mind. I’m sorry.

Piglet80 · 12/04/2022 01:30

Its standard for haematologists to request bloods before seeing the patient to rule out the obvious things first

itsjustnotok · 12/04/2022 01:35

Where I work at have literally just started doing these bloods as a routine thing when someone has treatment. As far as I know there is an option to opt out but it could be something they are doing locally so that people know if they have any illnesses that they should be aware of .

Nat6999 · 12/04/2022 02:18

I was tested for those things after being diagnosed with B12 deficiency.

tillytown · 12/04/2022 02:54

I was tested for everything whilst being diagnosed with MS. These tests are normal.

LBFseBrom · 12/04/2022 03:34

If he had anything to hide he wouldn't have told you about this test, op. If doctors thought it was something very urgent, he wouldn't be waiting six weeks. Please try to stop worrying, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Piper22 · 12/04/2022 03:44

Sounds suspicious. Possibly as though he’s had some sexual contact with someone, mentioned it at an appointment with a health professional and now doesn’t want to own up to it??

olympicsrock · 12/04/2022 04:34

Surely he went to the doctors for another reason recently? Joint pain or liver or skin condition perhaps ? A rheumatologist will often request a virology screen as part of a screen of things that cause odd symptoms. Haem will do so if you have a raised blood count.

That wouldn’t come from the haematology dept though, they don’t do contact tracing. They would refer to GUM/sexual health for that.
Chiefofstaff · 12/04/2022 06:30

I’m wondering why the letter from haematology is handwritten? GP and hospital letters are usually typed. Did he receive it by post? For your own piece of mind bearing he’s known for lying, I’d ask for testing yourself. There could be a very good and non-worrying reason these tests have been asked for but you are understandably left wondering what’s going on.

Herejustforthisone · 12/04/2022 09:24

It sounds like you don’t trust him and he’s not to be trusted, so if I were you, I’d request your own screening to look after your own health.
