Is an air fryer cheaper than using an oven?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic and as no idea where else to put this.

We have a big standard (10 year old) under counter electric oven. In light of the current, obscene, electricity charges I'm doing everything I can to save money.

One bad thing I still do is use the oven for cooking not very much. Oven chips, or just a garlic baguette. Sometimes we do need the full oven but I'm fairly sure that when just doing the kids tea I could use a countertop thing like an air fryer. I can't find any direct comparisons in terms of energy used ... does anybody know? It must save a fair bit?

Thanks 🙏

@hassletassle sounds very futuristic!

They often have sales on those - we got ours for £120 but honestly, we’ve not used the gas oven since. There are 5 of us and I can do loads of jacket potatoes, big trays of meat etc.

Oh and to answer your question about pizza, that one is great for them. Watch timings though as obviously, they cook a lot faster!

@Roselilly36

I bought an airfryer two weeks ago, absolutely brilliant, oven chips cook much nicer & quicker, sausages also cook lovely. Ours is Cosori 5.5l, square in shape, doesn’t take up too must space. Brilliant, so easy to use & clean, wish I had bought one years ago. Buy the largest, in cooking capacity you have space for.
That's the one I have. Love it.

I’ve got the tefal genius plus with the paddle - great for things like chilli and curry etc as well as chips and stuff as it stirs it!

On Sundays I now do the roast chicken in a slow cooker and my roast potatoes in the air fryer - so much easier!!

If I’m doing a curry I also do my rice in a rice cooker so everything is just switch it on and leave it to do it’s stuff

Rarely use the oven now…..

I'd recommend a remoska.I rarely use my oven any more. I've a Bolognese cooking in it at present and rarely cook any other way now.I make scones, grill sausages and a whole variety of stews and curries.
It makes the best lentil Dahl I've ever made.
It's basically a mini oven with the heat coming from the lid.

@thesunwillout

Have been contemplating this too. But I have a gas cooker, so no idea if it would be cheaper given the rise in electricity prices.

Also been looking at those halogen oven things.
One review I read said they were more versatile than the air fryers.

Has anyone got a halogen spaceship thing?

I have this one This is my third one in about 15 years. I love it and dread the day when I can no longer replace like for like. Biggest issue is that the bulbs do blow, but thus model comes with a spare. I cook everything from cheese on toast to a mixed grill with ease. I find it great for cooking from scratch as well as reheating , or for ready meals. Jacket potatoes come out lovely and fluffy.

Hiya thankyou!!

Lol spaceship thing so called because my daughter named it after seeing one at a mates home!

I’ve got the ninja 9 in 1 with the air fryer. I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever bought.

My ovens old and crap, take ages to heat up and doesn’t cook properly, very temperamental , the only thing I use my oven for now is pizza or the odd cake.

Lots of freezer shite going on on this house too! Id love an air fryer but haven't much room.
But how on earth do they do toasties, isnt the bread untoasted?

And hotter! I've only got a Vortex Mini, but I have to cook stuff at a lower temperature than recommended for oven cooking-I usually turn it down by 10 or 20 degrees or so.
Keithlovessmash · 14/04/2022 11:45

@sueelleker yes, we had quite a few burning instances when we first got the air fryer by following instructions. I always make sure it’s in at a lower temperature for a shorter time now.

I have a combination microwave. I use the oven far more than the microwave part. It comes with 2 trays so I can cook or heat lots of little in it. Takes a few mins to heat. Only use my main oven about 3 times a year. It also has a grill which I haven't used year
You can use both oven and microwave together to get that roasted taste but done so much quicker.

Lucywithout · 14/04/2022 13:04

I have a Ninja double and a Halogen spaceship. I often use both. Halogen can be found for about 30/40 GBP. Halogen will heat an individual Pizza. and it has a layer so two if wanted.Ninja was Xmas present before I had a Phillips which to be honest I oreferred. I almost never turn on big oven.Dont do baking. We did notice a reduction in electric.Jacket pots and a med chicken all roast in Ninja.

I've got an air fryer from Costco, was about £40 but must have nearly paid for itself with energy savings. Plus our oven is crap and never seems to crisp anything.

The air fryer is great for small and quick amounts (fish fingers or chips, can't get both in for example) but it's so quick. Fish finger sandwiches in ten minutes v about 30 minutes for the oven to heat up then cook.

Have also cooked plenty of burgers, sausages and kebabs in it. Cooks everything really nicely.
