Neighbours buzzing hot tub

Next door have decided to get a permanent hot tub installed on their deck a couple of weeks ago and since then I can hear a none stop hum within my house 24/7.

The fence got taken down to put it in, it still hasn't been put back up so I've had no privacy, they've also been using the hot tub during this time with no fence which I've found really awkward when putting washing out.

The low frequency hum drives me mental, I tried to approach next door and got told it wasn't their hot tub making the noise and told they refused to do anything about this. Aibu to expect a resolution to this and not have to sit in my house listening to it humming all day.

Would the local authority do anything? I've read up and believe the deck is acting like a drum and resonating in my house. It's not actually loud outside but in my house it's a constant low drone that is awful. I can no longer sit in my house in peace, I have to turn the TV up to drown it out and take tablets on a night to sleep or try to mask it.

@changeee1546789 thanks I'm waiting for the fence to go up then going to decide my next steps. I'm really hoping the noise just stops after that.

Hi there

What was the outcome?

I absolutely feel your pain. I have some dreadful neighbours with a dreadful inflatable hot tub. They live around the corner but their garden is next but one to ours. I can hear the drone from their tub pump all over my garden and in the kitchen. I can't open the two back bedroom windows because you can hear the hum in there. It started in lockdown and was on for 24/7 for about a year and they refused to do anything about it because "they couldn't hear it".

It was the most awful thing. I felt as if I was in prison. I couldn't go out because of lockdown and I couldn't even use my garden. I hope the fence brings you some relief.

I feel for you OP. I hate my neighbours’ stupid hot tub. But for me, the annoyance is more that it’s basically located under our bedroom window so I can hear every splash and squeak, and their whole conversation while they’re in there. I also hate that they play music in the garden too. Sometimes the hot tub does make a humming or filter noise but generally it doesn’t bother me too badly, so hopefully it will improve when you get a fence. I just find hot tubs completely antisocial unless you have a garden large enough not to affect others.

Shibby585 · 19/05/2022 07:40

@Merryclaire the fence made no difference, neither did a mat. I'm looking to move now as I can't even have the windows open it sounds like a massive supermarket fridge

the hot tub needs to run constantly to keep temperature and heated to 37 to 40 degrees. The hot tub itself is not on I.e bubbles/jets but the filter and motor will be running 24/7 to keep it warm and to keep it bacteria free.

These are the ideal temperatures for bacteria to grow!

yes i suffered for years from next door having a large chest freezer in the garage a commercial type one. it was in their garage next to my garage and the low frequency and vibrations came straight through. whatever room in the house you slept in you could feel it under the beds. awful i dreaded going to bed. the council came and made them remove it to the far wall but it did not improve the situation and we moved in the end.

I live across the road from someone with a 4 x man jacuzzi. It hums continually... All day..... And all night. It is about 45 feet away from my home.. Outside I hear nothing but in my house.... Well the persistent humming drives me and my husband mad. Seriously why do people feel they can house jacuzzis that big in their tiny suburban houses and gardens ..... So so shellfish. And yes
... the sound/frequency does penetrate the walls of our home. The council will do nothing as they said it would have to be louder to warrant a nuisance. Try living with it day in ad and day out.... Good old Swale Borough Council....and other councils... . Just don't care.

@NattyPearlOP

" Good old Swale Borough Council....and other councils... . Just don't care".

And under what legislation do you want them to take action?

I can't believe people still have hot tubs that stay on 24/7! So bad for the planet and such a kick in the teeth for those of us struggling with high energy prices and make every tiny saving we can.

The planet thing fair enough, but you can’t possibly be annoyed that someone spends money on heating their hot tub?

People can spend money on whatever they want. Do you also begrudge people driving a fancy car because a Kia Rio would do the same job?

You realise that other people wasting energy (bearing in mind that the quoted post was right when the energy crisis was ramping up) means that we all pay more?

FFS THIS THREAD IS FROM MONTHS AGO DICKHEADS

Maddy70 · 27/03/2024 02:56

Sneak in and put a bottle of fairy liquid in it

They will be in a bubbly mess and stop using it
Seriously you need to talk to them about using it at appropriate times or moving it away from ear shot

LINDAHOAD · 27/03/2024 06:31

yes like the heat pumps when once there was quiet at night noise that get into your mind 24/7. the council should act as you have a right to some peace and quiet in your home and they can regulate the hours that it is operating. get on to them again as see if he can be made to reduce the hours to 12 - to 7am.

HulaChick · 27/03/2024 06:41

Hot tubs do make a humming noise but it shouldn't be loud. I have one but it's at the bottom of the garden and I don't hear it from inside my house. I only have it on for 5 months over tge summer as it's far too expensive to run all year round (also, it came with the house when I bought it, I would never have been able to afford to buy one). It certainly does not cost £500 to empty the tub. I fill mine up once and last year it then cost £16 for it's initial heating up to temperature. Unless their's is the size of sn Olympic swimming pool, I can't see how filling it / emptying it could cost that much!
They do have every right to have a hot tub and over time the noise will probably become like white noise to you. Putting something underneath will likely not make any difference, plus they are hugely heavy! However, they do sound unpleasant if they were shouting at you but a low humming noise will always come from a hot tub I'm afraid.

NattyPearlOP · 27/03/2024 10:33

It is very loud in on my house..... The council did a sound survey and agreed the noise was coming from somewhere but it wasn't up to them to pinpoint it and deemed it not a nuisance.... Well not to them as they are not living here. Hot tubs in houses should not be allowed unless in an acre garden... And away from neighbours!!!!

I have the identical problem. The thing runs 24/7 all year long The local authority likely wouldn't "hear" what I hear every night whilst trying to sleep. Any solution???

Oblomov22 · 26/12/2024 06:20

This is so awful. I feel your pain. You feel powerless. Will the council do anything? Unpleasant neighbours can ruin your life.

LINDAHOAD · 26/12/2024 08:50

awful no peace in yourown home - i had this with a neighbours air pump and the exchanger and fan on - it is not loud noise but yiu can feel the fan cutting the air and the compressor - it seems to come from the floors.

the concils do not want to know - under staffed and kno very littlle about noise from these air heatf pumww

YeFaerieBean · 26/12/2024 09:05

Going from my hazy memory - the noise level considered to be annoying is 10 dB above the background noise, (less difference if the noise has tonal elements).

At night (11 pm to 7 am) the background noise level is going to be very low in a quiet residential area (say 37 dB(A)) and the noise you hear with the hot tub running is likely to be greater than 10 dB above that that ( so it’s going to be disturbing your sleep (and this is the noise level outside at your boundary not inside)

You need to tell the local district council’s environment team that you are being disturbed by this continual hot-tub noise (that is particularly disturbing due to the tonal elements, your sleep is being affected etc.) and you neighbours haven’t done any thing to mitigate the problem. You need to ask the council to investigate.

Of course going this route means you have to declare a problem with noise when you sell.

It would be a shame if animal faeces got in the tub then they’d have to drain and clean - it would get switched off then Wink

LINDAHOAD · 26/12/2024 12:49

i am afraid the councils do not want to know let alone enforce any noise issues
