To not want to pay 750 for theatre tickets

PurpleHollyhocks · 11/04/2022 10:09

Doing a weekend with DM and DC. DM would like to see a show but for all of us it’s £750. I think it’s just too much. DM disappointed and letting it show.
AIBU to be irritated by this given she is not paying for flights, hotels or tickets to Harry Potter etc

Its a lot of money of course YANBU, why is DM not paying for any of the trip? Could your DM pay for herself and one DC to go to the show - I assume it is a specific expensive show she wants to see and you and other DC do something else that evening?

ENoeuf · 11/04/2022 10:14

What show is it? There so many ways to get cheaper tickets.

Tidlo · 11/04/2022 10:14

It doesn't need to be that expensive Hmm

Lilifer · 11/04/2022 10:14

She is being copmpletely unreasonable - why can't she pay for you all to go??

PurpleHollyhocks · 11/04/2022 10:17

It’s the lion king and I’m afraid the tickets that are left are that expensive. I might see if she would like to go with one of the DC. Good idea

She doesn’t pay when we take her away, she’s on a pension so I just wouldn’t ask. I don’t mind that but I do mind the huffing when she doesn’t get her way

Where are you flying from

RicStar · 11/04/2022 10:22

Does she know how much the tickets cost? I am guessing not, if you are (very nicely / appropriately) funding the trip. I think a lot of people don't realise how much big shows can cost these days - I am taking DD to Wicked for her birthday and I was surprised by the £££ for fairly decent seats where she will be able to see although its not a new or premium imo show.

NoSquirrels · 11/04/2022 10:24

If you can’t afford it you can’t afford it. And I’d tell your mum straight if she’s being rude!

PurpleHollyhocks · 11/04/2022 10:25

Does that make a difference @Floralnomad to ticket prices. They seem to be standard

OP posts:
ENoeuf · 11/04/2022 10:30

When is it? Prices start at £40 and reviews for these cheaper seats are fine.

mrburrsir · 11/04/2022 10:36

Have you looked at all the different ticket websites?

I find that there’s often variation with prices for the same tickets. I saw a west end show the other week in a £35 seat but had seen identical tickets for £80 on other websites whilst looking for the best option.

Seatplan.com is also good for looking at seating options and seeing if cheaper seats are okay

Haus1234 · 11/04/2022 10:40

You can of course get cheaper tickets in theory, but if OP is looking for a particular weekend date then that’s a lot less likely! Could you see a different / less popular show, how old are the DC?

ENoeuf · 11/04/2022 10:42

of course, but lots of people don’t know all the options - worth checking for op,no?

Shinyandnew1 · 11/04/2022 10:45

You could try going up on the day and getting a cancellation ticket for the Lion King. Not sure what you mean about fights though as if you’re flying just to see the show, that obviously wouldn’t work.

Your mum is being horrendously cheeky though-not wanting to pay anything herself and then huffing because you won’t pay £750 is ridiculous. Does she have no idea how much these things cost or does she think you are really rich??

YerAWizardHarry · 11/04/2022 10:45

I'm not sure what you're saying is correct, the most expensive ticket for Lion King are around £140 pp and thats a package deal which includes champagne/ice cream/lounge access..

YerAWizardHarry · 11/04/2022 10:46

Sorry just realised that there may be more than 3 people going! I read it was you/DM/sister

AllOfUsAreDead · 11/04/2022 10:49

So she wants to go to a show, but she wants someone else to pay? Don't we all.. Grin

Sadly the world isn't that nice. Let her sulk, you'd think at her age she'd be less immature.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/04/2022 10:51

Has she aways expected other people to pay massive amounts of money on treats for her whilst she pays nothing or is this a new thing? I can’t imagine wanting to spend time with anyone like this.

Go and see Small Island at the National Theatre instead. Much better and cheaper. Have dinner at Tas on The Cut before. Great night out. Sorted
Daisydoesnt · 11/04/2022 10:53

Goodness, it's your mum! Can't you just say, I know it's so disappointing but the tickets are over £100 each and that's just crazy (or what ever they are).

irishfarmer · 11/04/2022 11:14

Does she know how much it will cost? Just tell her you can't afford it.

Cheeseandlobster · 11/04/2022 11:21

Have you posted about your mum before regarding a birthday and buying tickets for it as she requested then her getting huffy later over no birthday present? Even if this isn't you, your mum is being ridiculously entitled. I am going on holiday in June and 2 weeks abroad for me and my partner is £670. £750 is extortionate for 1 night if you are funding it. Explain how much it costs and tell her you will not be paying that - let's look at other shows.

That's £670 for both of us by the way
LIZS · 11/04/2022 11:26

Does it have to be now? There is usually Kidsweek in the summer(July/August) with free kids tickets per adult although for popular shows like Lion king you have to be quick when they are released in June.

PurpleHollyhocks · 11/04/2022 11:29

Thanks for all the suggestions re cheaper tickets options. I will check them all out.
@Cheeseandlobster no that wasn’t me although my DM does have ‘form’ Grin
